Information on Crosscountry skiing in North East Victoria starting from Falls Creek, based in Mount Beauty. Includes trail maps, tips and suggested tours.
http://kiewaview.com/cross_country.htm
Cross Country / Nordic Skiing
Victoria has a huge area of alpine country suitable for cross country skiing in winter, greater than the European Alps. The very best of this, is the sprawling expanse of hills, valleys and broad ridges of the Bogong High Plains. A number of mountains rise out of this plain and the area is dotted with historical cattle men's huts. This area is easily accessible from Falls Creek. Falls Creek resort itself has the unique Nordic Bowl. This is a sheltered area of flat and gentle slopes ideal for cross country ski learning and tuition and cross country race training. It is also a rallying point for ski tourers heading out into the national park. From Windy Corner, it is an easy ski of less than one kilometer to the Nordic Bowl. Within the resort there is a network of 20 km of groomed cross country trails and this is the key location in Victoria for cross country ski racing. The total groomed trails available from Falls Creek is between 30-60 km at any given time. Falls Creek is also the site of Australia's premier international cross country skiing event. The

71. Backcountry At Licola And Surrounds
Crosscountry skiing guide to the Licola area, Victoria, Australia.
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~freeheelers/licola.htm
Cross-country skiing guide to the Licola area
Access
Not far from Licola are some of the best and least known cross-country ski areas in Victoria. Either the Jamieson Road towards Mt Skene, or the Tamboritha Road can easily access snowfields in the most popular areas for skiers, especially adjacent to the Tamboritha-Mt Howitt Road. WARNING: These roads are not maintained during the winter, there are no facilities beyond Licola, so special care must be taken. Chains are essential for cars and four-wheel drives. You should also carry a shovel and a towrope. Driving in snow requires special skills, so be familiar with these before you go. Always let someone know where you are going. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle. Gate closures on the Snowy Range Road
The seasonal closure is located about 2km this side of the Snowy Plains airstrip. During times of heavy snow cover, the road is closed near the gorge. At these times, motorists should not drive past the gorge car park. Lost Plain and Mt Arbuckle
Lost Plain itself is an excellent area for snowplay and skiing for beginners.

Stephen's Study Room: Home - UK Medals - Gallantry - Victoria Cross
Introduction
This section deals with various people who have been awarded The Victoria Cross for bravery. It is the UK's highest award for bravery by a military person in the presence of the enemy. In order of precedence, the Victoria Cross is the highest award, and is the most senior decoration. It takes precedence above all other medals and orders, including the George Cross Only one family (the Seagrim Brothers ) has won both the Victoria Cross and George Cross; a different brother winning each of the medals. Only three people have won the Victoria Cross twice (VC and Bar). Click here for the details of these special people. The most recent awards of the Victoria Cross were made during the 1982 Falkland Islands conflict For an extremely interesting series of articles about some of their former pupils, who were subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross, visit the "We Remember Them" section at Summer Field School 's web site.

Victoria Cross to Captain Fegen Hero of H.M.S. Jervis Bay, Lost with Ship, is Honored. London, Nov. 17 - (C.P.) - A sturdy Irish captain - Fogarty Fegen - who went down with his ship, H.M.S. Jervis Bay, her guns blazing and her colors flying, was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously yesterday. The Jervis Bay was sunk Nov. 5 as she challenged a powerful German raider in the mid-Atlantic. The "suicide" stand of the armed merchant cruiser allowed at least 33 of 38 ships in the convoy to escape. The Admiralty announced that four ships were sunk by the raider and that one other ship still was unaccounted for. Another ship also escaped from the raider but later fell victim to enemy aircraft. Captain Fegen, 49, went to his death maintaining the great traditions of the Royal Navy. During the First Great War he served as a lieutenant and later was in command of the destroyers
