R. B. Cunninghame Graham
Traveller, writer, socialist and nationalist
Larger-than-life figure of a wide range of talents and interests: descended from Robert II on one side and Spanish nobility on the other, he spoke Spanish as his first language and rode with the gauchos in South America where he was highly regarded.
He was also a Lanarkshire Liberal MP and set up the Scottish Labour Party with Keir Hardie. He was possibly the only person to be president of both the Scottish Labour Party (1888) and the Scottish National Party (1934), where his interests later drifted.
A witty and charming man, he travelled widely, wrote and was a friend of figures like Morris, Whistler, Shaw, Wells and Buffalo Bill.

FABIAN SOCIETY
Fabian Society Archives
Extent: 949 boxes, 9 volumes and 6 folders.
Biographical History
Soon after its foundation the society established the 'Fabian News' in order to keep members informed of what was going on in the society. This was later followed by the 'Fabian Quarterly' and the 'Fabian Journal'. A publishing firm called Palm and Pine was established in 1938. This was originally independent of the society, but became Fabian Publications Ltd in 1942. It published Society literature until it was dissolved fourteen years later. The society also spread its message by organising public lectures, conferences and various schools. The Fabian Society is the oldest socialist organisation in Britain, but does not itself issue policy statements or put forward candidates for election to local or national government. Therefore, the society became affiliated to the Labour Party, although it also collaborated with the Independent Labour Party on specific projects. From 1949 onwards, it became customary for the Fabian Society to hold a tea meeting at the Labour Party Conference, at which guests were addressed by a leading Fabian politician. There have been a number of special interest groups within the society, and these produced their own research and publications. When women's suffrage was a burning issue, a separate Women's Group was established. Similarly, the Fabian Nursery was set up in response to a perceived need to encourage the younger members of the society.

Biographical Sketch
Max Beerbohm, considered by some to be the best essayist, parodist, and cartoonist of his age, was born Henry Maximilian Beerbohm on August 24, 1872, in London, to Julius Ewald Beerbohm and his second wife, Eliza Draper Beerbohm. His early education was at a preparatory school in Orme Square, and then at Charterhouse. He attended Merton College at Oxford 1890-1894, but did not receive a degree. While at Oxford, Beerbohm published caricatures and essays in the Strand and other periodicals. In 1893 he became acquainted with Sir William Rothenstein, who introduced him to Aubrey Beardsley and other members of the literary and artistic circle connected with the Bodley Head. Through Beerbohm's half brother, noted actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree, he became acquainted with Oscar Wilde and his friends. By the time Beerbohm left Oxford, he had developed his personality as a dandy and humorist. In 1895 he traveled with Herbert Beerbohm Tree's theatrical company on a four-month tour of American cities, working as Tree's secretary. After his return to London, he moved in with his sisters and widowed mother. He contributed drawings and essays to various periodicals, including the

Biographical Sketch
Ottoline Violet Anne Cavendish-Bentinck Morrell (1873-1938) was the daughter of Lieutenant-General Arthur Bentinck and his second wife, Augusta Mary Elizabeth. Ottoline had three older brothers and a half-brother from Bentinck's first marriage. She spent the early years of her childhood in the sheltered manner of upper class children of the time, raised largely by a nurse and servants, spending time at both the country house and the summer house in London. Ottoline's father had expectations of succeeding his cousin, the fifth Duke of Portland, which were disappointed when Bentinck died first in 1877. This left the family in rather straitened circumstances until the Duke of Portland settled the succession of the title and an allowance on Ottoline's half-brother in 1878, and then died a year later. The sixth Duke of Portland and his family moved into the family seat at Welbeck a few weeks later.
