Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321
"That singular splendor of the Italian race," as his first biographer, Boccaccio, called him, was born, a lawyer's son, in Florence in May 1265. He was baptized Durante, later contracted into Dante (the name means "the much-enduring" and "the giver"). In his Vita Nuova (the New Life ), he relates how he first set eyes on "the glorious lady of his heart, Beatrice," he then being about nine years of age and she a few months younger. To Boccaccio we owe the generally accepted fact that she was the daughter of Folco Portinari, for Dante himself never gives the slightest clue as to her family name. But their chance meeting in May 1274 determined the whole future course of the poet's life. The story of his boyish passion is told with pathos in the Vita Nuova . There is no evidence that any similar feelings were aroused in the heart of Beatrice herself. She was married early to Simone de' Bardi, but neither this nor the poet's own subsequent marriage interfered with his pure and utterly Platonic devotion to her, which intensified after her death, on June 9, 1290. Shortly after, Dante married Gemma Donati, the daughter of a powerful Guelph family. That it was an unhappy marriage is open to interpretation what is certain is that after Dante's exile he never appears to have seen his wife again.

Dante Alighieri (1265-1321)

Ahi quanto a dir qual era è cosa dura
esta selva selvaggia e aspra e forte
che nel pensier rinova la paura! Tant'è amara che poco è più morte;
dirò de l'altre cose ch'i' v'ho scorte. Io non so ben ridir com'i' v'intrai,

Great Italian poet from Florence who wrote the epic work Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy) in vernacular Italian. Divina Commedia represented the cosmology and cosmogony of Dante's day. Dante also wrote De Monarchia, a treatise on political science. He believed that the purpose of government was to preserve peace and the best form was a world monarchy. He drew examples from the Roman Empire, and thought the Holy Roman Empire could unify the world. His universe was a perfect, hierarchal, intelligible cosmos.

Dore's Spectacular Purgatory and Paradise of Dante
A Majestic Two Volume Set [Dore] Dante Alighieri, (1265-1321)
THE VISION OF PURGATORY AND PARADISE. Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary 2 volumes. Very early issue, With Critical and Explanatory Notes and Chronology. With 60 extraordinary Gustave Dore illustrations. Large Folio, in majestic bindings of dark morocco gilt-extra, covers with superb and elaborate all-over designs gilt extra incorporating large central decoratioins, panels, corner tools and gilt border lines, spine with wide raised bands tooled in gilt, gilt lettered in two panels, page edges and endpapers gilt to complement. xxiv, 183; xii, 337. A very handsome set of this fantastic work. The pages are very clean and fresh and the bindings in fine order. Dore's huge and spectacular illustrations bring Dante's visions to life in a style and manner to satisfy artistic appetites both subtle and grotesque. A truly grand example of the nineteenth century engraving.
The sheer mass of the text blocks in these magnificent folios has left many copies broken or disbound. This set is unusually sturdy and tight and uncommonly clean as well.

Dante - The Sansovino Edition - 1578
A Folio Copy in Contemporary Italian Vellum Dante Alighieri, (1265-1321)
With a fine woodcut title page, backed, and 96 woodcut illustrations, including three full-page, 77 large cuts in the text, and head- and tailpieces. Printer's woodcut device on the final leaf. Large 4to (308 x 214 mm), full antique Italian vellum, spine with morocco lettering label gilt, bands on the spine and discreet tooling also in gilt. Ff. [28], 392 (4). A handsome copy, quite crisp and clean. This is the very fine folio edition with a portrait of Dante, done after Sessa's 1564 edition, the first edited by Sansovino. It incorporates two commentaries: that of Christoforo Landino, which first appeared in the Florentine edition of 1481, and the noteworthy commentary of Alessandro Velutello, first published at Venice in 1544. The volume includes extensive introductory matter by all three commentators, and a running commentary that virtually overwhelms the poem itself.
The woodcuts in this edition are taken from those in Velutello's edition of 1544 and represent a departure, both iconographically and stylistically, from those in the Brescia, 1487 editionthey appear more accomplished and more confident in execution. This is also the first edition of Dante's works to include a portrait of the poet.Christoforo Landino was a member of the literary circle which surrounded Lorenzo de' Medici; in addition to his Dante (which originally appeared in 1481) he also edited Horace and Virgil and translated Pliny's NATURAL HISTORY.
