Encyclopedia

Davis, Rebecca Harding Davis, Rebecca Harding, , American novelist, b. Washington, Pa.; mother of Richard Harding Davis. Her early nonfiction pieces, particularly those collected under the title Life in the Iron Mills (1861), and her first novel, Margaret Howth (1862), foreshadowed the naturalistic techniques of later 19th-century writers by showing how a dismal environment can warp character. See her autobiographical Bits of Gossip (1904); biography by G. Langford (1961).

LIFE IN THE IRON MILLS AND OTHER STORIES (Second Edition)
Rebecca Harding Davis
With a Biographical Interpretation by Tillie Olsen
This 1861 classic of social realism – the first book to be reprinted by The Feminist Press in its series of rediscovered women writers – remains a powerful evocation of what Davis herself called “thwarted, wasted lives . . . mighty hungers . . . and unawakened powers." The New York Times Book Review said of the novella: "You must read this book and let your heart be broken.” With an insightful biographical essay by Tillie Olsen, and with two short stories never before anthologized, this expanded edition is the most complete volume available from this important 19th-century writer.

http://www.contracabal.org/801-28-13.html
The English term "queer" does not pejoratively describe homosexuals. It describes a state of being different from, but not necessarily in opposition to, a societal norm. In America, homosexual men and women who wish to think of themselves in oppositional terms frequently choose to call themselves queer. This has now expanded to include transgendered and bisexual people and has become part of common language usage in the United States. (Terry Goldie, Queer Nation? Eleventh Annual Robarts Lecture, York University, Toronto, Ontario (04 Mar 97)).
Doerty (elected judge partly through the financial and political support of a gay rights group) denounced Nmesis as homophobic without a shred of evidence to support his accusation. He then made his remarks part of the court record. Those comments probably reflect his own bigotry and self-hate. His various unsubstantiated charges of homophobia, misogynism, meanness, anti-Semitism, and racism, also his repeated professional and academic assassination, will probably support charges of gross judicial misconduct on appeal. He should consult with his Council House pimp before he makes any more unfounded accusations and leaves himself open to more charges.

What came first is probably the forcible immersion in history, since (for instance) my father, an actor and radio announcer, was blacklisted the month I was born. That same summer, Richard Nixon made his name at HUAC (the House Committee on Un-American Activities). So Nixon has always been with us.
