Harold Frederic (1856-1898), a New York journalist and foreign correspondent at the time of his death, is best remembered by his strong, purposeful novel, The Damnation of Theron Ware Kate Douglas Wiggin (1857-1923) published her first notable story, The Birds' Christmas Carol , in 1888, and The Story of Patsy in 1889. Of her subsequent stories Rebecca (1903) has, perhaps, had the largest success. Her popular character, Penelope, first appeared in Penelope's English Experiences Mrs. Edith Wharton (born at New York, 1862) won a place of distinction based largely upon her intensely realistic novels, The House of Mirth (1905) and The Fruit of the Tree Owen Wister (born at Philadelphia, 1860) is known as the author of The Virginian Richard Harding Davis (1864- 1916) was born at Philadelphia. A journalist and famed as a war correspondent, he was one of the most popular short-story writers of the day; the creator of "Gallagher" and "Van Bibber," and author of several popular romances, among which are The King's Jackal Soldiers of Fortune (1899), and

Like many other authors in this exhibit, Sax Rohmer tried many careers before settling on writing. After publishing several short stories, he abandoned fiction writing for a time and tried journalism, illustration, and work as a composer for music halls. Finally, in 1912, he published his first story featuring Fu Manchu, "The Zayat Kiss." It was an immediate success, and Fu Manchu went on to become one of the most famous and widely read series of all time. Most of the stories were published in popular magazines. After concluding one series of the stories in 1918, Rohmer revived the character in the 1930s, and again in the 1950s. Although he created other detective characters and wrote some fantasy fiction, Fu Manchu is clearly his most famous creation. Rohmer died in 1959, of complications from Asian flu. Rohmer, Sax. The Mask of Fu Manchu The Mask of Fu Manchu is bound in yellow cloth, with bold black lettering on the front cover and on the spine. The front cover is simple, with merely the title and Rohmer's name emblazoned in black. The spine also has the title and author, and the publisher, as well as an oriental mask of frightening visage. The dust jacket is splendid. The same mask is held half in front of a woman's face, in lush tones of gold, red and green. The title and author peek out as well from behind the mask.

Days Off , and other digressions, by Henry Van Dyke (1852 - 1933), pub Charles Scribner's Sons, February 1908 (first printing was October, 1907). Dark blue cloth blocked in gold, white, teal and violet. The William Morris look is very strong here. This is one of a collected works series by Scribner's and, as such, has all the hallmarks of a book "made for posterity", including the top-edge-gilt text block. It's interesting to compare it with the Kentucky Cardinal cover of almost a decade earlier though: clearly, even in such a solemnly "genteel" book, some of the frivolity of art nouveau has crept in. There are eight illustrations by Frank E Schoonover As for the cover artist on this book, there is no direct attribution in the text, but the front bears the inconspicuous initials, MA, for Margaret Armstrong (1867 - 1944), who was prolific in designing similar covers for Scribner's (as well as Dodd, Putnam and Harper) from the 1890s through the early years of the 20th century and has been held largely responsible for the "genteel" look of many such made-for-posterity books in this period. Perhaps because she inscribed her characteristic monogram on her designs, she is almost alone among cover artists in having escaped anonymity during this golden age of cover design. This talented woman also achieved some fame as a mystery writer, publishing three whodunits in her waning years.
