46. Case 3: Birds In Literature
R141707. Walter De la Mare (18731956) was a poet and novelist who wrotea great Deal for children. He also compiled several anthologies.
http://rylibweb.man.ac.uk/data1/dg/exhibition/birds/case3.html
CASE 3 - BIRDS IN LITERATURE
Illustrated by Edmund Dulac.
The Arabian Nights , or Thousand and One Nights , is a collection of stories of uncertain date, of which some, such as Ali Baba Aladdin and Sindbad the Sailor have entered European folk tradition. The setting of many of the tales is Central Asia, but they cover a wide geographical area, and there are differences in language, so the collection probably contains works of several authors, or several strands of oral tradition. The story of Sindbad recounts his voyages, shipwrecks and adventures during his return home. This illustration, by Edmund Dulac, is of the Giant Roc (or Rokh), a huge bird which carries Sindbad off. The Roc is also mentioned by the traveller Marco Polo. Its existence is sometimes said to have been inspired by discoveries of the huge eggs of the extinct (and flightless) Aepyornis of Madagascar.

An Elegy on the Death and Burial of Cock Robin: Ornamented with Cuts
York: printed by J. Kendrew, [n.d.].
`Cock Robin' is a traditional nursery rhyme or popular ballad. These rhymes frequently had hidden meanings and were a safe way of making critical comments on happenings of the day. In `Cock Robin' the various human parts are taken by different birds and animals. It has been suggested that it originated with the intrigues surrounding the downfall of Robert Walpole's government in 1742. The earliest known occurrence of the rhyme in this form is in 1744, which could support this theory. However, it might be a re-working of a much older rhyme. Chapbooks, of which this is an example, were small, cheap booklets sold by wandering dealers or chapmen. They usually contained popular ballads or tales, or children's stories.

South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission evidence
The government of President Nelson Mandela in South Africa established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995 to investigate human rights abuses during the apartheid years. It was set up as an investigative body, not as a court of law, and its purpose was not to impose punishment but to establish the truth, to encourage reconciliation, to grant amnesty and to recommend appropriate compensation. The Commission was chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and spent over two years gathering evidence, conducting public hearings and taking statements from witnesses. The Official Publications Department has now acquired a complete transcript of all the hearings held before the Commission throughout the country. This verbatim record was obtained by our supplier through a contact in the company that was providing the transcription service. As such, it represents the fullest record available. There is an unofficial web-site ( http://www.truth.org.za/
