A KIDLINK DIARY - SPRING 1999
*Quick and short about some of what goes on within the Kidlink
community*
May 4, 1999
EDITORIAL
I know of no person capable of following everything going on within
the Kidlink community. After all, there are now some 75 public mailing lists in 15 language areas in addition to the things going on in our real-time interactions network. There's simply too much going on. This diary does not pretend to cover it all. It very quickly list some of what goes on within Kidlink, and occasionally provide links and pointers for more information. Enjoy! PREFACE
This is the online hypertext version of the Online World handbook. It deals with practical aspects of using the rapidly growing global on-line information resource. The book is distributed in a form designed to be easily accessible with the maximum range of computers, printer types, and search programs. In this way, it is compatible with most electronic reading devices for the blind. Many frills, such as fancy formatting, extraneous characters or tags, have been omitted to achieve this. The main subject of the handbook is what you can get out of the global online resource. Expect an outline, not a comprehensive list or directory of all available offerings. We explore selected applications across network and service boundaries to show how selected needs may be satisfied. In the process, we give information about how to reach many interesting offerings.

Empowering Children through ICTs Tatiana França is eleven years old and lives in the 'Rocinha' one of the poorest areas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She likes studying, listening to music, and - she underlines - 'does not like to do ironing since it's very boring'. Tatiana is one of the thousands of children who participate in the Kidlink network, an initiative connecting children all over the world. This network helps children know each other, and -most importantly - raises awareness about themselves and about their right to build their own future. It was May 1990. During the two weeks just prior to the Electronic Networking Association's (ENA) Fifth International Conference in San Francisco, USA, Odd de Presno - a Norwegian national - organized a very successful online conference for 260 children in Norway, Canada, and the United States. The interest in this initiative proved to be very high and Odd de Presno launched the Kidlink idea to some colleagues in the conference. "We can do conferencing for kids again, as an ongoing activity, or we can drop it. However, if we drop it, we must understand that we are leaving something important behind" De Presno said.
On May 25, 1990, Odd de Presno, and the two other founders of Kidlink - Nancy Stefanik and Knut Braatane - gave birth to Kidlink.

    3.2 Organisasjon og administrasjon
In Kidlink's core organization, some 100 hardworking volunteers strive to keep our infrastructure going, so that our youth can succeed in their global networking efforts. On the local level, thousands of teachers, parents, youth club workers, andother interested adults help out. Kidlink's focus remains global networking for youth 10-15 years of age. Everything that we do reflects this single goal and mission statement. (Kidlinkslist 31.12.96)
Kidlink is a grassroots project aimed at getting as many children in the age group 10 - 15 as possible involved in a global dialog. The work is supported by 25 public conferences (mailing lists), a private network for interactive dialog (chat), and an online art exhibition site.
