61. Everywhere And Nowhere. Chap 2
(Odd De Presno 31.12.96). Most of the administrative tasks are passed around. In his New Year's address 1996/ 97, Odd De Presno wrote the following

CHAPTER 2: THE KIDLINK COMPUTER NETWORK
A large number of of volunteers worked hard on bridging the gaps between languages and cultures, while at the same time striving to protect the differences ... All Kidlink's maling lists, Web pages, chat channels, creations, projects and discussion topics are part of one operation. (Odd de Presno 31.12.96)
This chapter is meant to be a short despription of how Kidlink Computer Network is built up and organized. For a more thorough orientiation and a better of its functions and organizational structure, I recommend Kidlink's own Internet information with URL: http://www.KIDLINK.org/english/general.html
The following brief descriptions of the fora are meant to establish a basis for further analysis. All the examples in this thesis were gathered from 1. July 1995 to 1 July 1997. Kidlink's leaders have agreed to my reprinting excerpts of dialogues, discussions and stories, because, among another things, they themselves see Kidlink's electronic meeting places as a part of the public sphere. Nevertheless, in the interest of protecting people's privacy, I have reprinted very few technical specifations from the headings of these e-mail messages, and I have eliminated the sender's last name and e-mail address . I alternate the terms (e-mail) "message" and "contribution" in order to add variation (to the text). I use the work "participant" to designate the people who together create dialogues and discussions on Kidlink computer network.

THE ONLINE WORLD How to Profit from the Information Superhighway By: Mike Weaver and Odd de Presno
HOW THIS BOOK WILL HELP YOU
THE ONLINE WORLD - How to Profit from the Information Superhighway is a very timely new book that explains The Internet and what it has to offer.
In this fascinating book, Odd de Presno from Norway and Mike Weaver from Saskatchewan take you on a guided tour of The Internet. They discuss the electronic mail networks that already span the world and let you "talk" to people or businesses in distant countries, as if they were next door. The authors recognize the importance of THE ONLINE WORLD for business, when they state: "The entrepreneur sees the online world as a new, profitable playground. Many of them have made it their profession to search for information for others, and they earn a good living doing so. Others advertise and sell products and services by modem. Some set up their own online services to sell knowledge and know-how, be it in aqua culture, production of wine, marketing, or the petroleum offshore market." The Internet also gives you access to an unbelievable wealth of information. To illustrate this, the authors talk of Eduardo Salom who heads Software Plus SA in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and uses it actively to find information that can help his company develop industrial applications. They also mention civil engineer Kai Oestreng at Ski in Norway who uses telecommunications to find programs for his business and watch the developments in the local personal computer market.

KIDLINK - Global Networking for Youth 10 - 15 years of age
Odd de Presno
Abstract
Today, knowledge has a short life, and society has become very complex. We often experience that it is faster and better ask others for advice, than to visit the library or search in databases. This is the essence of what KIDLINK is all about. The primary objective of this global grassroots organization is to help youth 10 - 15 years of age build a global personal network using telecommunications. All kids are welcome, they be rich, poor, handicapped, children of immigrants, socially disadvantaged, even kids with mortal diseases. Since the start in 1990, more than 85,000 youth living in 101 countries have participated (by April, 1997), and new kids are joining every day. A report about the KIDLINK experience.

About Kidlink

Empowering youth to build global networks of friends
Kidlink is a global, non commercial, virtual, user-owned organization based in Norway. Its goals are to empower kids and youth with free educational programs to give them better control over their lives, help them mature, get friends, create social networks, and collaborate with peers around the world individually or through their classrooms.
How Kidlink Works: A Brief Overview
All participating kids or students must register by answering four basic questions , and send them in. An automated response gets sent them.
Once a youth or a child is registered, they are eligible to take part in Kidlink's activities, be it discussions, educational offerings, or other activities. Participation in the Kidlink youth dialog is limited to youth through the secondary school level.
Kidlink's public mailing lists (Listserv) is the main means of communication. Participants are recommended to join each list individually. When someone posts to the mailing list a copy is sent to each member of that list, and it also becomes a part of the archives of the list so there is no need to keep all the emails one receives.

This is a problem that we had to treat seriously in the KIDLINK network for
kids 10 - 15 years of age. Many of us were very surprised to learn that a
teacher in the U.S. could lose the job if one of her kids were discovered
in the act of writing the word "fuck" in an online conversation.
The other side of the discussion included our coordinators from Iceland, a
very pasifist country, who laughed at the usage of such a word, but did not
want to hear about 10 -15 year old kids shooting with guns while riding a
horse.
This is part of what we came up with (the full policy document can be retrieved by email to 0CGIZtSr@computerauthor.com using the command GET KIDLINK POLICIES): Hope this gives food for thoughts, and future contracts between business
