The Spirituality of Pilgrimage: Ethnological and Biblical Background
Anyone inquiring into the spirituality of pilgrimage would turn to Hans v. Campenhausen's 1930 monograph "Ascetic Homelessness". The title itself is telling: it is a question of asceticism. Von Campenhausen considers as "decisive" the "practical, ascetic striving for the mortification of the flesh, and loss of God, and monks, who thus became the classic exponents of this ideal". As correct as this approach is, it is also too narrow. v. Campenhausen refers to the example of Abraham, much quoted by the ascetics, who left home, kin and hearth at God's command (Gen, 12, 1). It is, however, striking that this Bible quotation is often heard together with that from the New Testament militating against the family and demanding that father and mother be left. The peregrinatio was intended to effect not only the mortification of the flesh but also a release from family ties. In this respect it had a revolutionary effect in both the Irish and the greater early medieval world, where the network of families, clans, households and feudal allegiances was everywhere of paramount importance.

Dismissal Hymns and Kontakia for Celtic and Old English Saints Dismissal Hymn (Tone 2) Nephew of Patrick and missionary in Ireland, thou didst spread the Faith in many lands. From Wales to Brittany, and thence to the Isle of Man, thou didst glorify Christ wherever thou didst tread. Pray to Christ to save our souls. Dismissal Hymn (Tone 3) O holy Finbar, thou didst labour faithfully and gain many disciples who followed thee to Christ. As thou didst guide souls in thine Irish monastery, pray to Christ our God to grant us His great mercy. Dismissal Hymn (Tone 4) O noble exiles Fragan and Gwen who fled to Brittany in troubled times: ye established churches to God's praise and glory; your children brought joy and gladness to the Breton people. We praise you, glorious Saints. Dismissal Hymn (Tone 8) O Monenna, who strove for perfection alone on a mountainside, thou wast found worthy to be called 'daughter of Elijah' and didst live like the desert fathers. Pray to Christ our God that our souls may be saved. Dismissal Hymn (Tone 6) O wise Illtyd, thou wast noble by birth and noble in mind and didst train many saints in the way of holiness. Pray to Christ our God to raise up saints in our days to His glory and for our salvation.

    Aidan (August 31)
Irish bishop and monk, 7th century. He established a monastery with his companions at Lindisfarne at the request of Oswald. He spent his time in missionary work with the Angles with the goal of freeing the Celts from their oppression. When Oswald's castle was being attacked, Aidan called on the power of God and at that moment the flames changed direction, burning down on Penda and his army. Cuthbert is believed to have had a vision of Aidan at the moment of his death, being borne by angels to heaven. He is said to have died at Bamburgh castle on the east coast. Almedha (August 1)
Welsh, 6th century. She was believed to be a daughter or granddaughter of Brychan. It is suggested that she was murdered and that a chapel was built to honor her (Brecon, Wales). Armel (August 16)
Welsh monk. He travelled from Wales to Brittany. He is depicted leading a dragon by the stole around the neck and in armor, and cast it off Mt. St. Armel. Many believed that praying to Armel would reduce headaches and fever. A statue of Armel can be seen at his tomb in Westminster Abbey and in Canterbury Cathedral. Henry VII believed that he had been saved from death in a shipwreck by Armel. Arnulf (August 22)
Hermit, date unknown. He is believed to have lived and died at Eynesbury, Cambridgeshire, England.
