Daniel Defoe (1661?1731). JURE DIVINO A SATYR. In Twelve Books.By the Author of The True-Born-Englishman. London 1706 Various

Daniel Defoe (1661?-1731)
JURE DIVINO: A SATYR. In Twelve Books.
By the Author of The True-Born-Englishman.
London: 1706 Various pagings, with each book paged separately: pp. (4); xxviii; 2l; [viii] 26; 32; 28 (i.e.24); 30; 32; 20; 28; 34; 24; 26; 32; 23 [1] + Engraved frontis portrait; chipped at edges and mounted to thick paper. Folio. 33 cm. Heavily foxed and age stained. Crude later binding of leather backed marbled boards. * Manuscript ownership signature, on the original blank rear endpaper, of (Colonial Governor) Robert Hunter. First edition. Large paper issue. Moore, 115; Boston Public Library, Defoe Collection, p. 67-68. Rare with the portrait.
'Jure Divino' is a long satirical political argument in verse endorse the idea of constitutional government for and by the people. The scholarly notes really make fascinating reading. * This copy was owned by Robert Hunter (d. 1734). Hunter was a Scot who distinguished himself as a soldier under Malborough. He was appointed Lt. Governor of Virginia in 1707, but captured en route by the French. Released in 1709, he was appointed Governor of New York and New Jersey. He served with great success for almost ten years, and was one of the few popular Royal Governors in American history. He later served as Governor of Jamaica (1727-1734). A man of wit and humor, he authored (with Lewis Morris) a satiric farce 'Androborus' (1714); the first play to have been written and printed in British America. Perhaps it was his reading of this copy of Defoe that encouraged that project.

Amsterdam: D. Mortier, 1732. Originally published at Geneva in 1676, this tale is among the best known of all the accounts of Terra Australis. It is a fantastic mixture of the marvelous and the realistic, and was intended as a criticism of Christian tradition. Denis Vairasse (1665-1681).
L'Histoire des Sevarambes, Peuples qui Habitent une Partie du Troisieme Continent Communement Appele La Terre Australe. .. Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1715. First published in Paris in 1677-79, Vairasse's fictitious account of the strange land and people encountered by voyagers after being blown far south off course was reprinted many times, including an English translation that was published in 1727 as Part III of Gulliver's Travels . Both these tales belong to that genre of fictitious narratives purporting to be truthful accounts of voyages made by Europeans to then little known lands. Based upon realistic detail they were intended as satires or criticisms of the existing state of society. Raymond W. Kirkbride Memorial Fund

    ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
    literature
    Defoe, Daniel (1661?-1731)
The life and strange surprising adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, mariner…
    5th ed.
    London : Printed for W. Taylor, 1720.
Defoe is considered the founder of the English novel. He was a prolific writer who addressed politics, religion, including witchcraft, and fiction. He worked as a journalist and as a kind of intelligence agent for the Whig government. Robinson Crusoe is his greatest work. Modelled on travel narratives and based on the experiences of one William Selkirk, it captured the minds of the English with Crusoe's enterprise and adventures and above all his meeting with the native he named Friday. "One day, about noon, going towards my boat, I was exceedingly surprised with the print of a man's naked foot on the shore, which was very plain to be seen on the sand."
