Unknown Romance Novelists
This is part of the A Celebration of Women Writers , but I have few clues about these women. They are the authors of novels I have from 1850s-1940s, or were taken from lists in old novels or catalogs. The Romance and Mystery writers of today are their literary grand-daughters. One of them is the great-grandmother of a friend - after her husband died, his family refused to help her, so she supported and educated her six children by writing. If you have any information about authors, please let me know : titles, birth or death dates, biographical information. If you have books by authors I haven't listed, I would welcome that too. Eventually the novels will be analysed for what they reflect about the women who wrote and read them, but for now I'm just collecting them. Also see:

Henry Charles Lea Papers - Scope and Content
Correspondence According to the Lea's biographer, Sculley Bradley, Lea destroyed his early correspondence (prior to 1860). There is some significant correspondence during the Civil War, but the bulk of correspondence in these files dates from 1868 to 1909. Very little material in these papers is revealing of Lea's personal life or family relations. One very early letter (undated, ca. 1837) was written by Lea to his parents while he and his brother Carey were staying with relatives; there also is a single page from a letter that appears to be from his mother, Frances Anne Carey Lea, to Lea in 1853. An interesting group of ten items from his father, Isaac, to Henry C. Lea were written while Henry was sailing on his yacht through New England waters during the summer of 1881; these letters describe the assassination of President Garfield. Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and Theodore Roosevelt were among Lea's correspondents, and there is a letter from Woodrow Wilson addressed to Arthur H. Lea, written when Wilson was president of Princeton University. Other United States officials to whom Lea wrote include James M. Beck (1861-1936), solicitor general of the United States; Dorman B. Eaton (1823-1899) of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, who drafted the Pendleton Act of 1883; and Noah H. Swayne of the United States Supreme Court.

WHEN LADY: WHEN WOMAN

A Consensus of Opinion on a Perplexing Question
By Mrs. Margaret Deland Mrs. Burton Harrison Miss Sarah Orne Jewett

The regret has, of late, been made very manifest in polite circles as to the fast-disappearing usage of the old-fashioned and courtly word of "lady," the consensus of opinion being that the word should find its ancient and rightful place in our speech. Upon this renewal of attention to the word have followed discussions of the perplexing question of the proper use of the term "lady" and that of "woman." It has seemed most fitting, in view of the plural use of the word "lady" in its title, that The Ladies' Home Journal should meet these tendencies of popular thought in a discussion of both phases of the question. This it seeks to do in the contributions which follow.
MRS. DELAND'S DEFINITION
Any discussion which makes us reflect upon the value of words is helpful, and the question under consideration when it is right to use the word "woman" and when "lady" ought to set us all thinking. In considering this question, we must, of course, go back to the beginnings of both these words to get at their primary reason for being. One authority traces the word "woman" back to wifman or webman : the person who stays at home to spin as distinguished from the word weapman , who goes abroad to fight. The suffix man is, of course, generic, and includes both male and female. Lady, primarily, signifies one who has to do with a loaf or bread one who kneads. So it would appear that, to start with, both these words meant that the person so named was a worker. By-and-by, however, new meanings begin to grow around these primitive and simple ideas. Woman meant merely an adult female of the human race; lady meant some one who was, as we say, "well born," and, consequently, well-bred; in other words, "Lady" grew to mean a woman, plus education, refinement, dignity and culture.

19th-CENTURY WOMEN'S POETRY
This site has been prepared by Sharon M. Harris, University of Nebraska, Co-Editor of LEGACY. There are now several valuable poetry collections of 19th-century U.S. women poets available, including Paula Bernat Bennett's Nineteenth-Century Women Poets (1997), Janet Gray's She Wields a Pen (1997), and Cheryl Walker's American Women Poets of the Nineteenth Century (1992), as well as excellent work in Dickinson studies. To complement these collections, the following poems are presented as additional examples of the rich field of nineteenth-century women's poetry.
The majority of these poems are not included in the recent anthologies; but they are selections drawn from nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century anthologies and may offer interesting comparisons. Bibliographical References
