Anyone who has begun to think places some portion of the world in jeopardy. Every great advance in science has issued from a new audacity of the imagination. Failure is instructive. The person who really thinks learns quite as much from his failures as from his successes. The end justifies the means only when the means used are such as actually bring about the desired and desirable end.

Lenin John Dewey (1859-1952) applied Uniformatarianism to public education, and believed that mankind had reached the point in its evolution that mankind could control its own evolution.
By 1905, Dewey was the dominant voice in American teacher educational change, operating out of Harvard University. In 1920, Russia hired John Dewey to construct a program of "progressive education" for the Soviet school system. By 1932 Russia informed Dewey that he was a failure, and that rather than educating the children, his system was turning out a nation of delinquents. In 1933, after failing in the Soviet Union, Dewey set up the same Humanistic system in the United States.
"Dewey changed the aim, content, and methods of education. It is important to understand why and how he changed the aim of our schools. He was a national socialist, promoting one hundred percent state control or ownership of property, all means of production, whether capital, natural resources, or labor. He called it collectivism. In 1905 he organized the Intercollegiate Socialist Society, along with Jack London, Upton Sinclair, Walter Lippmann, and W.E.B. Dubois. In 1921, the Society changed its name to the League for Industrial Democracy., and Dewey served as its president in 1941. It's aim was to put teachers in the classroom who were collectivists, as well as ministers in the pulpits and leaders in the labor unions. In 1962, the League formed an action arm called the Students for a Democratic Society."

Philosophical naturalist influenced by the pragmatism of Peirce and James. According to Dewey thought involves practical problem-solving. Problem solving in turn requires the testing of rival hypotheses against experience. Dewey's philosophical pragmatism, concern with interaction, reflection and experience, and interest in community and democracy, led to the development of a coherent educational philosophy. Imperialism Is Easy
By John Dewey
The New Republic 50 (March 23, 1927). I Imperialism is a result, not a purpose or plan. It can be prevented only by regulating the conditions out of which it proceeds. And one of the things which most stands in the way of taking regulatory measures is precisely the consciousness on the part of the public that it is innocent of imperialistic desires. It feels aggrieved when it is accused of any such purpose, then resentful, and is confusedly hurried into dangerous antagonisms, before it perceives what is happening. The charge of imperialistic desires sounds strange to the group of men who have created the situation in which they appeal to their home country for intervention. All they want, as they indignantly assert, is protection of life and property. If their own government cannot afford that protection, what is it good for anyway? I would not say that it gives no cause for legal complaint; I would not say that it does not afford many an occasion for protest. From the Mexican standpoint, the government is fighting for control of its own country, as much as if it were at war, and too scrupulous a regard for legal technicalities might mean defeat. An unusually frank Mexican ex-official said to an American business man: "Of course, we have to handicap you by legislation and administration in every way we can. You are much abler and more experienced in business than we are; if we don't even up some other way, you will soon own the whole country." Such things indicate the ease with which the relations of an industrially advanced and a backward country ultimately drift into situations where the vested legal rights which have grown up are confronted by a vigorous national sentiment, and can hardly be maintained without appeal to government intervention.

John Dewey 1859-1952
John Dewey, who was to become one of the most powerful influences on educational thought in the 20th Century, was born in the town of Burlington, Vermont, in 1859. His father was proprietor of the local general store where, apparently, locals would foregather from time to time to discuss, with equal interest, affairs of both state and locality. According to one apocryphal story the store window carried the legend:
Hams and cigars: smoked and unsmoked.
The intimate small-town ethos of 19th century Burlington played a large part in forming Dewey's educational outlook in two ways: one negative, one positive. On the negative side he was convinced at a very early stage that the traditional, formal, desk-bound approach to schooling which was typified by the small town and rural schools of his childhood was futile. This kind of schooling was inadequate for the growing USA: a new society being born out of a simple agricultural economy which was being transformed by unprecedented industrialisation, immigration, rapid population growth, and drastic social change. (The old education) was predominantly static in subject matter, authoritarian in methods, and mainly passive and receptive from the side of the young. ... the imagination of educators did not go beyond provision of a fixed and rigid environment of subject matter, one drawn moreover from sources altogether too remote from the experience of the pupil.

John Dewey (1859-1952)
John Dewey was the most significant educational thinker of his era and, many would argue, of the 20th century. As a philosopher, social reformer and educator, he changed fundamental approaches to teaching and learning. His ideas about education sprang from a philosophy of pragmatism and were central to the Progressive Movement in schooling. In light of his importance, it is ironic that many of his theories have been relatively poorly understood and haphazardly applied over the past hundred years.
Dewey's concept of education put a premium on meaningful activity in learning and participation in classroom democracy. Unlike earlier models of teaching, which relied on authoritarianism and rote learning, progressive education asserted that students must be invested in what they were learning. Dewey argued that curriculum should be relevant to students' lives. He saw learning by doing and development of practical life skills as crucial to children's education. Some critics assumed that, under Dewey's system, students would fail to acquire basic academic skills and knowledge. Others believed that classroom order and the teacher's authority would disappear.
To Dewey, the central ethical imperative in education was democracy. Every school, as he wrote in

Dewey viewed the individual and society as a transactional relationship. Individuality and sociality are interrelated and interdependent. This is what we have come to know as the democratic society. Dewey did not embrace either supernaturalism or organized religion. He is frequently accused of being a chief promoter of secular humanism. This is the thought system behind separation of church and state.
