Biography of Charles Dickens 1812-1870 Background: Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was a nineteenth century English writer who wrote such classics as: A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, A Tale Of Two Cities, Great Expectations, and many others. His first novel, the Pickwick Papers, was written as a serial from 1936-1937. Early in his career he taught people to expect the unexpected for he may have had them laughing in the Pickwick Papers but he soon showed a more serious side in Oliver Twist. He was labeled a social reformer because of the attack the Poor Law received as a result of his novel Oliver Twist. Charles took pride in his role of social reformer. Towards the end, Charles was not a happy man despite his literary success. His marriage had not been a love match, and in the end they lived separate lives. Restless, he released his non-literary energies in travel - to the US, Switzerland, and Italy. The energy and exuberance of this man was reflected in the extraordinary vividness of his descriptions. Despite his exuberance, there was always an undertone of sadness to Dicken's life. What distinguishes him from other authors is the way he was able to control the readers emotions; this was the product of his very intense personality.

My Christmas Library: Charles Dickens Most of us here in North America, or anywhere influenced by the English Christmas tradition, will know of the Victorian aura that pervades the season like the brandy soaking into the plum pudding. Much of the Victorian Christmas that exists for us today was chronicled by such authors as Charles Dickens. By the early part of the nineteenth century Christmas had almost died out. The Times newspaper, for example, did not once mention Christmas between 1790 and 1835. Charles Dickens with his Christmas stories did more than anyone to change all that. Published in 1843, A Christmas Carol was the first of five "Christmas Books" by Dickens. He wrote the story in just two months, beginning in October, 1843 and finishing at the end of November. The book was published on December 17, 1843 and immediately sold out. Its successors were The Chimes The Cricket on the Hearth The Battle of Life (1846), and The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain (1848). Dickens wrote several other Christmas stories, among them A Christmas Dinner (1835) written under the pseudonym of Boz. From the later 1840's through until 1867 he published many stories in the weekly periodicals he edited:

Charles Dickens THE BOYHOOD OF DICKENS Gilbert Keith Chesterton Charles Dickens was born at Landport, in Portsea, on February 7, 1812. His father was a clerk in the Navy Pay-office, and was temporarily on duty in the neighborhood. Very soon after the birth of Charles Dickens, however, the family moved for a short period to Norfolk Street, Bloomsbury, and then for a long period to Chatham, which thus became the real home, and for all serious purposes, the native place of Dickens. The whole story of his life moves like a Canterbury pilgrimage along the great roads of Kent. There was another touch about the boy which made his case more peculiar, and perhaps his intelligence more fervid; the touch of ill-health. It could not be called more than a touch, for he suffered from no formidable malady and could always through life endure a great degree of exertion, even if it was only the exertion of walking violently all night. Still the streak of sickness was sufficient to take him out of the common unconscious life of the community of boys; and for good or evil that withdrawal is always a matter of deadly importance to the mind. It must be remembered (as I have suggested before) that there was something about the county in which he lived, and the great roads along which he traveled that sympathized with and stimulated his pleasure in this old picaresque literature. The groups that came along the road, that passed through his town and out of it, were of the motley laughable type that tumbled into ditches or beat down the doors of taverns under the escort of Smollett and Fielding. In his neighborhood were definite memorials of yet older and yet greater English comedy. From the height of Gads-hill at which he stared unceasingly there looked down upon him the monstrous ghost of Falstaff, Falstaff who might well have been the spiritual father of all Dickens's adorable knaves, Falstaff the great mountain of English laughter and English sentimentalism, the great, healthy, humane English humbug, not to be matched among the nations.

His father played an important role in Charles Dickens' youth since he was imprisoned for three months for debt when young Charles was only 12. The child was briefly employed then in a blacking warehouse. Dickens was so traumatized by all his early humiliations that he did not give his autobiography to publish. Thanks to an inheritance he could study shorthand and enters a solicitor's office as clerk. Later he becomes a news reporter on Morning Herald, where he publishes Sketches by Boz , its success making him write The posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (1836-1837). Driven by publication in monthly serialization, Dickens has a very creative period and in his novels he denounces his abusing times. In 1837 he publishes Oliver Twist . Disappointed by an slaving America, he publishes in volume form American Notes (1842). His historic novel Barnaby Rudge (1841) was influenced by Carlyle, who he strongly admires. His father, John Dickens , was a clerk in the Navy Pay Office. In 1814 John was transferred to Somerset House in London. In 1817 John moved his family to Chatham and worked in the naval dockyard. It was here, at Chatham in the Medway Valley, that Charles experienced his happiest childhood memories. John was transferred back to the London office and moved his family to Camden Town in 1822. John Dickens, continually living beyond his means, was imprisoned for debt at the Marshalsea debtor's prison in Southwark in 1824. 12 year old Charles was removed from school and sent to work at a boot-blacking factory earning six shillings a week to help support the family. Charles considered this period to be the most terrible time in his life and would later write that he wondered 'how I could have been so easily cast away at such an age'. This childhood poverty and feelings of abandonment, although unknown to his readers until after his death, would be a heavy influence on Dickens' later views on social reform and the world he would create through his fiction.

This is due not only to the quality of his writing in itself but also to the widespread adaptation of his work for the stage and the screen, something already foreshadowed by Dickens' own highly successful second career as a public performer in recitals of readings from his own work, an activity that took him all over Britain and North America. After a stormy childhood produced by his father's financial misadventures he began his writing career as a journalist and was a leading reporter of parliamentary debates but he soon achieved success also as a writer of short sketches and humorous short stories. Some of these were incorporated into later collections such as Sketches by Boz ( his pseudonym ) and The Pickwick Papers and their popularity and that of the many colourful, comic characters appearing in later novels have given him a wide reputation as a comic or, at least, a light-hearted writer. It has even been suggested that early books such as A Christmas Carol with its ghosts, family jollifications and its pantomime defeat of evil miserliness by goodwill, was a major factor in creating the modern English Christmas which is usually far more lavishly celebrated than in many other parts of Europe including Scotland.
