The hero was a well-known character of his day.” Malone, Wyomingana, p. 10: “Reminiscences of an old-time cowboy of the 70s and 80s chiefly in Montana but typical also of Wyoming at the time of the Texas cattle drives. Easy, informal style.” Reese, Six Score 1: “This is perhaps the most straightforward account of cowboy life. Teddy Blue Abbott was raised in Nebraska; after leaving home, his first job as a cowboy was with the notorious Olive outfit. He had numerous other jobs before coming up the trail to Montana in 1883, where he remained. In 1884 Abbott went to work for Granville Stuart, foreman and part-owner of the D-H-S outfit, at that time the largest in Montana. Eventually he married one of Stuart’s daughters and settled down, but not before some hot times in Miles City and elsewhere.” Smith 1.      $350.00

Naturalist. 2) J. Frank Dobie (18881964) - Storyteller of the Southwest Life and. Literature of the Southwest, The Longhorns. 3

Journal – Great Plains 2002 This journal comprises the proceedings of the NEH Summer Seminar for Teachers, “The Great Plains from Texas to Saskatchewan: Place, Memory, Identity,” convened at North Dakota State University in 2002. Journal entries were recorded each day by designated scribes and posted to the e-mail list of the seminar, from which they were compiled into this page. Date / Scribe Proceedings 1 July Bob Ehrle Monday began with introductions of some of the key people we will use/meet during our sojourn here in the northern plains. Fran Fisher is our library resource, John Bye is at the archives, Dr. Thomas Riley is the Dean of the College of Humanities, and we also heard from the University CEO, Dr. Joe Chapman. Following a discussion from Dr. Chapman, Dr. Isern passed out paper to guide us through some assessments of Webb's book. We were first asked to name some adjectives descriptive of the plains. Some of these included treeless/unforested, dormant, insubordinate, factitious, windy, vivifying, ocean-like, liberative, "awe-full," deep, restless, peaceful, vast, gold, green, bright, subtle, and boring. It was also said that the plains has a "vigorous 4-season climate." We were then asked to name the types of adjectives that had been used. Emotional, objective, physical environment, and cultural.

The Black Book Surge
and Two University Presses

The University of North Texas Press came to our attention through its by Alan B. Govenar and Jay F. Brakefield (1998, ISBN 1574410512). This was while we were compiling our bibliography of black nonfiction books published in the last decade of the twentieth century. The focus of Deep Ellum appeared to be a significantly relevant one for the era into which publishing was clearly entering. We had no fix on this publisher which was obviously poised on the threshold of the surge of the publication of books by and about blacks. A look at this imprint and its backlist suggests that UNT Press correctly assessed the promising future for subjects dealing with black Americans and their quotidian life and history. A look at the publications list of The University of North Texas Press in this regard is instructive. This press was established in August 1987, and published its first books in 1989. Further, it claims to publish approximately 16 to 20 books a year, with more than 140 books currently in print. Deep Ellum

Houston History.com Historical Tape Information A very special time in Texas history began with the opening on March 17, 1949 of the world famous Shamrock Hotel, which was enshrined in Edna Ferber's classic book and motion picture, "GIANT". This talk is not only about the hotel but its builder, the famous and controversial Texan and wildcatter, Glenn McCarthy. Included is the background on his National ABC network radio series from Houston, the award winning music and variety radio program "Saturday at the Shamrock". From these broadcasts of the 1940's and 50's you will hear Humphrey Bogart when he sang at the Shamrock's famous "Emerald Room", George Burns and Gracie Allen, the Marx Brothers, songs written about the Shamrock, Houston and Texas and the Big Bands of Tommy Dorsey, and Freddie Martin. Answers to questions: Why did Richard Wainerdi, president of the Texas Medical Center have the Shamrock Hotel torn down? What happened to the $28,000 in gold coins that were missing from the corner stone when the Medical Center had it secretly removed? HISTORY OF THE JAPANESE SURRENDER, WWII

60. 100 Years Of Library Champions
Dobie, J. Frank J. Frank Dobie (18881964) earned national fame as anauthor, folklorist, and commentator on Texas life and politics.
http://www.txla.org/html/pr/releases/champs.html
The First 100 Years of
Texas Library CHAMPIONS
Introduction by Jan Moltzan,
a library consultant and co-chair of the
ad hoc
Centennial Celebration Committee. LIST of CHAMPIONS As the Texas Library Association celebrates 100 years of service, we look to the preservation of our past by pausing to honor 100 giants who have paved the way by their activities, leadership, and overall support in making a significant contribution to libraries and library service during the period 1902-2002, a contribution that continues to shape the future of Texas. These champions believed that a literate and educated public was essential to maintaining a democracy. They stood firmly for open access to information and intellectual freedom. They fought gallantly for library funding, the development of library education, and the preservation of history. Many took their passion to the national scene, while others devoted their energies to issues geared to Texas. All embodied the core foundation of modern librarianship that we treasure today. The selection jury of Julie S. Alexander, Leatrice J. (Lea) Bailey, Dale G. Fleeger, John H. Slate, and Susan K. (Sue) Soy was organizationally chaired by Robert S. Martin and superlatively completed by John H. Slate. A 'call for nominees' was issued, and the jury is indebted to the grassroots effort of nominations received from throughout the state.
