  • Texas Writers Overview
By Diane LaGrone Texas is the land of vaqueros, cotton, and oil wells—as well as all the vibrant images that those things seem to produce. These stereotypical views that most people have of Texas are not too far from reality. It is, however, a land that was, by those struggling to settle the southwest, sacrificially carved from the rawest of resources before it became the state of diverse cultures that we see today. All of these facets of Texas are reflected in its vast literature; the common thread running through it all is a connection with the outdoors. Whether the subject is the Texas Rangers (the ones carrying six-shooters and long rifles, not the baseball players) as glorified by Walter Prescott Webb, or J. Frank Dobies'

The cemetery is situated in the southeast section of the city of Hastings and adjacent to both Gauardian Angels and St. Boniface Catholic Cemeteries. Most of the marked burials are located in the eastern half of this cemetery. There were a few burials in the western half of this cemetery. This cemetery contains a small Ash Garden in the western section. The ash garden is fenced on three sides and has burial stones for Patricia Ann Hall and Zelda Y. Boenig. In the 1910 "History of Dakota and Goodhue Counties, Minnesota", by Editor-In-Chief Franklyn Curtiss-Wedge, he wrote: ‘... St. Luke’s Parish Cemetery ... 9 May 1856, Abraham Traux donated five acres of land in the southwest quarter of section 34 to the parish of St. Luke’s for the purpose of a cemetery, to be governed by the church. The first body buried in this cemetery was that of Mrs. Hetherington, in May 1856.’ (page 272)

    Dr. Margaret C. Berry
is an author, historian, and student affairs administrator at The University of Texas at Austin.
    Professors Who Made a Difference
An acclaimed longitudinal study of the impact of college on students, undertaken from the mid-1920s to the mid-1960s, was published in 1969 by psychologists Theodore M. Newcomb at the University of Michigan and Kenneth A. Feldman at Stony Brook-New York. When Dr. Newcomb was asked, "From all that research and personal experience, what does college do for a person?" his reply startled the academic world: "There isn't, I'm afraid, much evidence that they [professors] do have any effect on students. The fact is that students neither expect faculty contact nor get it. In most colleges, the faculty goes one way and the students go another." Dr. Newcomb's reply was accurate when it was stated. In the major U.S. universities faculty research was emphasized more than teaching. Yet by the end of the 1960s all of our values, including those relating to education, started being questioned. Since then University of Texas administrators and faculty have worked to improve the undergraduate experience, to improve the relationships between faculty and students, to improve teaching, and to encourage senior professors to leave their research and writing long enough to teach undergraduates. Serious efforts are being made to further the "teaching-learning connection." Student-faculty contacts that go beyond the classroom to include informal settings are important in facilitating acculturation, as are discussions that are not just limited to academic work, but extend to social and intellectual issues as well as advice concerning career issues. Even if a student is unable to create a niche in his or her peer group, frequent student-faculty contact can promote persistence by helping to "mitigate feelings of social isolation."
