WORLD OF THE CHILD
Stories: After 1850
The second half of the nineteenth century was the golden age of children's literature in England and the United States. Great writers teamed with great illustrators to produce the books we still consider classics. The industrial revolution led to advances in printing which made books colorful, affordable, and plentiful. The growing middle class, with its increased interest in education, expanded the audience for children's books. Pictures and Stories from Uncle Tom's Cabin Uncle Tom's Cabin , one of the most influencial books of nineteenth-century America, was first published in book form in 1852. Within a year, simplified editions for children appeared in both the United States and England. In this retelling, portions of the story are in verse. An introduction states: "this little work is designed to adapt Mrs. Stowe's touching narrative to the understandings of the youngest readers and to foster in their hearts a generous sympathy for the wronged Negro race of America." Thomas Hughes, 1822-1896.

New Jersey literature, with a singularly long and rich history, has one grave handicap: almost every widely-recognized writer who has contributed to it has been identified more quickly with another state or label. Yet James Fenimore Cooper ( Leather-Stocking Tales ) was born here; Alexander Hamilton ( The Federalist ) married and was shot to death here; Jonathan Edwards ("Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God") died here; Washington Irving ("The Legend of Sleepy Hollow") began his serious literary career in Newark; poet Marianne Moore lived in Chatham; F. Scott Fitzgerald ( The Great Gatsby ) earned his B.A. at Princeton; Herman Melville ( Moby Dick ) frequently visited his Metcalf grandchildren in South Orange; Mark Twain ( Adventures of Huckleberry Finn ) called himself "the Bishop of New Jersey"; Thomas Nast (cartoonist) sharpened humor from the state, while the Gilbreth family ( Cheaper by the Dozen ) exemplified it here; Walt Whitman ( Leaves of Grass ) retired and wrote his last important work here; and Toni Morrison (

Men from Burlington County petitioned the New Jersey Constitutional Convention to enfranchise women. Their petition went unheeded and the Constitutional Convention validated the Act of 1807 and wrote white male suffrage into the new Constitution. Carrie Cook Sanborn, nineteenth century Quaker, artist, head
of the Cedars Art Colony, Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. Dorothea Lynde Dix (1802-1887) sent her "memorial" to the New Jersey senate regarding the inhumane care of the state's mentally ill. Susan Waters received the traditional education for a girl child,
which included art lessons. She was able to pay for her own and her sister’s education by selling her work. Waters spent much of her adult life in
Bordentown. She was well known for her animal paintings and primitive style. The New Jersey legislature revised its abolition law: enslaved blacks became apprentices for life; their children were free.
