    Boolean Algebra
Leibniz initiated the search for a system of symbols with rules of their combination in his De Arte Combinatoria of 1666, as well as developing the binary notation. In 1854, George Boole Professor of Mathematics at Cork from 1849 despite having no first degree, formalised a set of such rules in the seminal work entitled, perhaps optimistically, An Investigation of the Laws of Thought . Boole's aim was to identify the rules of reasoning in a rigorous framework and revolutionised formal logic after thousands of years of little progress. They transformed logic from a philosophical into a mathematical discipline. These rules have subsequently become known as Boolean algebra and the design of all modern binary digital computers has depended on the results of this work. These logical operations, normally implemented as electronic gates , are all that are required to perform more complicated operations such as arithmetic.
    Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
, a Mathematics Lecturer at Christ Church Oxford from 1855 to 1881, was influenced by the work of Boole. He had a general interest in algebra and also teaching. In May 1855 he noted in his diary:

    Lewis Carroll
"Lewis Carroll" (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), the author of Alice in Wonderland, of mathematical treatises, and of a quantity of stories and poems, serious and humorous, was the son of a churchman and the eldest of eleven children. His mother and father were first cousins, and unusually religious. At the time of his birth, his father, Dr. Dodgson, was the vicar of Daresbury, Cheshire (he later was presented with the Crown living of Croft, Yorkshire, and subsequently became Archdeacon of Richmond and one of the Canons of Ripon Cathedral), and was a distinguished scholar whose favorite study was mathematics. Daresbury was isolated, but there was no want of children, so Charles invented games to amuse himself and his brothers and sisters. He made a train with railway stations in the Rectory garden; he did conjuring in a brown wig and a long white robe; he made a troupe of marionettes and a stage with the aid of the family and a village carpenter; he wrote all the plays for it himself, and manipulated the strings. The most popular was The Tragedy of King John.

The mathematical sciences particularly exhibit order,
symmetry, and limitation; and these are the greatest forms of
      the beautiful.

Today, it is not only that our kings do not know mathematics,
but our philosophers do not know mathematics.
      Julius Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967)
Life would be stunted and narrow if we could feel no
significance in the world around us beyond that which can be
weighed and measured with the tools of the physicist or described by the metrical symbols of the mathematician. Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality Albert Einstein I don't believe in mathematics. Albert Einstein Do not worry about your problems with mathematics, I assure you mine are far greater. Albert Einstein If it's green, it's biology, If it stinks, it's chemistry, If it has numbers it's math, If it doesn't work, it's technology Unknown I think of lotteries as a tax on the mathematically challenged.

Die Fortsetzung "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There" "Alice im Spiegelreich" ) folgte 1872. Danach publizierte

There have been any number of illustrators for this delightfully nonsensical tale over the years. The appearance of the characters has also tended to change, according to each artists' style. Each set of illustrations was richly evocative of the tale, however, and each has contributed to our continued enjoyment of this story. The work of several of the earliest illustrators has been chosen for inclusion here, along with two more contemporary artists. Sound a wee bit surreal? Perhaps. But then, so is the story itself. To the best of our knowledge, this BEDTIME-STORY CLASSIC is the only rendering of Alice In Wonderland which successfully melds the nearly complete works of multiple artists with the tale itself.
