His nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark (1876) is, in essence, more of the same but at sea and has since been turned into a moderately successful musical. The later children's work, Sylvie and Bruno (1889, vol. 2 1893) was expanded from "Bruno's Revenge", a short story published in Aunt Judy's Magazine in 1867. Besides mathematics and children's stories, Carroll was also a keen photography enthusiast. His particular penchant for photographing young girls is now viewed with some amount of probably quite unfounded suspicion. Also, he was an unbelievably fussy man who wrote no less than forty-eight letters of complaint to the steward at Christ Church while he taught there about everything from odours in rooms to the choice of meant for dinner. Nonetheless, his books are still popular amongst adults and children alike and have been translated into many languages - including Latin! Lewis Carroll, or to give him his real name, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832- 1898), is best remembered for his two Alice books, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871). Many people do not know that he was a mathematician by profession. He studied at Christ Church, Oxford, and after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics, he remained at Christ Church as Mathematical Lecturer for the 47 years until his death.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is better known by the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll". Although he was a mathematician, he is best known as the author of Alice's adventures in wonderland (1865) and Through the looking glass (1872), children's books that are among the most popular of all time. They are distinguished as satire and as examples of verbal wit. Dodgson wrote mathematical works under his own name but for his children's books he invented the pen name "Lewis Carroll" by translating his first two names "Charles Lutwidge" into Latin as "Carolus Lodovicus", then anglicising and reversing their order. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's father was the Reverend Charles Dodgson. Charles Dodgson senior was born in 1800 and studied at the University of Oxford where he gained a First Class degree in both mathematics and classics. He was appointed as a mathematics lecturer at Oxford where he held a Fellowship but, on marrying his cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827, he had to give up his Oxford Fellowship. He then became a curate at All Saints' Church in Daresbury and it was in that town that ten of Charles and Frances' eleven children were born. Charles Lutwidge was the eldest of his parents three boys, having two elder sisters Fanny, born in 1828, and Elizabeth, born in 1830. Charles was baptised on 11 July 1832 in his father's church and grew up in a strict Christian household. His early education, like that of his brothers and sisters, was provided by his parents. He read mostly religious books as a child and an indication of his rapid progress is that he had read

Almost everyone who has visited Ripon Cathedral will have been shown the carving of the Griffin chasing the rabbit down the rabbit hole, carved on the 15th century misericord under the Mayor's seat in the choir and will have been told the long-held opinion that, together with the underground, tunnelled crypt and other carvings, it could well have played a part in inspiring Alice in Wonderland . Ripon comes into the Dodgson story in 1852 when as a young man his father, also Charles, was appointed a canon of Ripon Cathedral, requiring thirteen weeks residence in Ripon each year which lasted for sixteen years. During vacations from Oxford young Charles joined the family in Ripon, where he worked not only on his mathematics but also wrote letters, poems and stories such as Ye Carpette Knyghte, and Legend of Scotland (for the Bishop 's children) as well as parts of Alice Through the Looking-Glass. His The Hunting of the Snark, the longest and arguably the most important humorous poem in the English language, has amongst its principal characters not only a Boots but also a Bellman, both well-known Ripon characters. A prodigious letter-writer, in Ripon Charles Dodgson began a register of the letters written and received which he kept till just before his death, eventually reaching number 98,721.

Lewis Carroll Home Contents Lewis Carroll is well known throughout the world as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass . Behind the famous pseudonym was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematical lecturer at Oxford University with remarkably diverse talents. Dodgson's boyhood was spent in Newton-by-Daresbury, Cheshire, where he was born on the 27th January 1832, and in Croft, Yorkshire. He spent his adult life in Oxford and died at Guildford in 1898. Besides the Alice books, he wrote many others including poems, pamphlets and articles. He was a skilled mathematician, logician and pioneering photographer and he invented a wealth of games and puzzles which are of great interest today. Through his range of talents he has acquired great respect and has a large following. Charles was the first son, although not the first child, of Rev. C. Dodgson, Vicar of Daresbury and his wife Frances Jane nee Lutwidge. Not much is known about young Charles - or his family for that matter - during this period although it is known that the Dodgson's had a connection with Cheshire that spanned more than a decade and in the case of Charles Lutwidge this covered eleven years (1832-43) The "world", young and impressionable Charles Lutwidge Dodgson came into was that of rural Cheshire and it was a landscape and a way of life untouched by the great changes that were then occurring elsewhere in the North and other parts of the British Isles. No "Satanic mills" could be found there least not Newton-by-Daresbury and the immediate surroundings, and this was to be the setting for young Charles for the first eleven years of his life.

Throughout’ this dual existence Mr Dodgson pertinaciously refused to acquiesce in being publicly identified with “Lewis Carroll.” Though the fact of his’ authorship of the “Alice” books was well known, he invariably stated, when occasion called for such a pronouncement, that” Mr Dodgson neither claimed nor acknowledged any connexion with the books hot published pnder his name.” He died at Guildford, on the 14th of January 1898. His memory Is appropriately kept green by a cot in the Children’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street, London, which was endowed perpetually by a public subscription. ‘ See S. D. Collingwood, Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll (1898). The etymology of these names has been much discussed. That of the latter, which has generally been adopted by German and French authorities, seems to defy investigation, but the former has been shown by Prof. Schlegel (Versi. en Mededeel. X. Akad. Wetensch.. ii. pp. 2~5 et seq.) to be the homely name of the dabchick or little grebe (Podiceps minor), of which the Dutchmen were reminded by the round stern and tail diminished to a tuft that’ characterized the dodo. The same learned authority suggests that, ,dodo is a corruption of Dodaars, but, as will presently be seen, we herein think ‘him mistaken.

CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODSON "LEWIS CARROLL" Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodson in Daresbury, Cheshire, on January 27, 1832, was the son of a churchman and the eldest of eleven children. His mother and father were first cousins, and unusually religious. At the time of his birth, his father, Dr. Dodgson, was the vicar of Daresbury, Cheshire (he later was presented with the Crown living of Croft, Yorkshire, and subsequently became Archdeacon of Richmond and one of the Canons of Ripon Cathedral), and was a distinguished scholar whose favorite study was mathematics. Carroll went to Mr. Tate's school at Richmand at age 12; his father having educated him until then. Carroll excelled in his studies and became the champion of the weak and small. He earned the reputation of "a boy who knew how to use his fists in a righteous cause." After contributing a story to the school magazine, Dr. Tate wrote to Dr. Dodgson that Charles had "a very uncommon share of genius," and "you may fairly anticipate for him a bright career." From Richmond, Carroll went to Rugby to further his education, and then on to Christ Church College, University of Oxford, his father's college. According to the terms of the studentship, Carroll was to remain unmarried and proceed to holy orders. Several years later he was ordained a deacon, but he never proceeded to priest's orders. Throughout his education, Carroll consistantly distinguished himself with honors, congradulations, and respect from his peers and mentors alike. He wrote, "I am getting tired of being congratulated on various subjects; there seems to be no end of it."

This quiet little village, situated in lush Cheshire countryside, is probably most famous as the birthplace of the author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson born in Daresbury in 1832, whose work has brought happiness to thousands of children throughout the world. Today his birthplace is marked by a series of interpretation plaques. Daresbury is located a few miles east of Runcorn and south-west of Warrington, in the borough of Halton. It is located 1 mile North of Junction 11, M56 motorway. There is a bypass in place around the village, thus ensuring its quiet, tranquil atmosphere. Like many villages today, Daresbury's local shops have all closed down but the village pub and smithy remain, (the smithy is now run by an agricultural and horticultural engineer).
One of the more noticeable features of Daresbury is not an ancient monument but the tower of the Daresbury Laboratory. Built in 1967, it is a major government scientific research centre. Recently, there has been a new addition to Daresbury in the form of Daresbury Court. This houses the NW regional headquarters of Origin UK, one of the fastest growing IT services providers.
