Donal Grant was descending a path on a hillside to the valley belowa sheep-track of which he knew every winding as well as any boy his half-mile to and from school. But he had never before gone down the hill with the feeling that he was not about to go up again. He was on his way to pastures very new, and in the distance only negatively inviting. But his heart was too full to be troublednor was his a heart to harbour a care, the next thing to an evil spirit, though not quite so bad; for one care may drive out another, while one devil is sure to bring in another. A great billowy waste of mountains lay beyond him, amongst which played the shadow at their games of hide and seekgraciously merry in the eyes of the happy man, but sadly solemn in the eyes of him in whose heart the dreary thoughts of the past are at a like game. Behind Donal lay a world of dreams into which he dared not turn and look, yet from which he could scarce avert his eyes.

What Jesus lives for "Now Davie," said Donal, "what have you done since our last lesson?" Davie stared. "You didn't tell me to do anything, Mr. Grant!" "No; but what then did I give you the lesson for? What is the good of such a lesson if it makes no difference to you! What was it I told you?" Davie, who had never thought about it since, the lesson having been broken off before Donal could bring it to its natural fruit, considered and said, "That Jesus Christ rose from the dead." "Wellwhat is the good of knowing that?" Davie was silent; he knew no good of knowing it, neither could imagine any. The Catechism, of which he had learned about half, suggested nothing. George MacDonald The novels of George MacDonald all have a common link. I believe his purpose in writing is for characters and his readers to experience spiritual growth by witnessing the New Testament as lived through others. " It moved me the way books did when, as a child, the great gates of literature began to open and first encounters with noble thoughts and utterances were unspeakably thrilling."- Elizabeth Yates, an editor for one of MacDonald’s novels. MacDonald’s main characters live out and apply the word, the lessons, and the life and character of Christ with excellence. The characters become part of the readers life, forever to be remembered and easily recalled when the reader finds himself in similar situations. MacDonald’s flavorful words and ability make the stories so real and captivates his readers. They left me encouraged, strengthened and caused me to question priorities, examining What is most important? What is my purpose? The books inspire the readers to be more thankful and more helpful to others. MacDonald’s novels are touching and have moved me beyond words to express their value. I am thankful for books that contain so many scriptures and especially so many scriptures that fit the circumstances of the story so well. But not all books from the same author are not of the same quality or excellence. MacDonald is a supreme example of the necessity that we must use our discernment to pick and choose according to our own convictions. MacDonald authored a few fairy tales stories that I feel are such a contrast from his novels. It’s almost like two entirely different authors. "The Light Princess" and "At the Back of the North Wind" are two that I’ve read and would not recommend to anyone. 2nd Corinthians 10:5 tells us to.. "cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.." Some fairy tales are simple and harmless enough, but when writers use:

The Story, the Teller and the Audience in George MacDonald's Fiction Lewiston N.Y.: Edwin Mellen Press, 2000. 235 x 160 mm, 156 p, h/b, ISBN 0-7734-7728-4. This important book was unfortunately received too late for a full review to be published in the present issue of North Wind . Its importance lies primarily in the fact that Ankeny has recognised how thoroughly MacDonald "understands the intricate relationship between textuality, authorship, readership and authority," as Roderick McGillis expresses it in his preface (viii). Very many readers of MacDonald have intuited this fact, but have not brought it fully to consciousness. Ankeny's analyses of some of MacDonald's novels on this basis are at once profound and (now that they have been pointed out) self-evident—the hallmark of genuine research. Ankeny's introductory chapter serves its purpose to prepare the reader for her principal themes, although it has some glaring omissions. For example, there is no exploration, here or elsewhere in the book, of how MacDonald's thinking developed over the period of his writing career. This first chapter is hard reading, but Ankeny becomes inspired when she starts to explore specific texts. Sir Gibbie is the main subject of chapter 2, subtitled "Literacy, Humanity and Epistemology."

George MacDonald ) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. As an author, he was a primary influence on C.S. Lewis and a generation of early 20th century fantasy authors. He was born on December 10 at Huntly Aberdeenshire Scotland . His father, a farmer, was one of the Macdonalds of Glencoe , and a direct descendant of one of the families that suffered in the massacre of 1692 Macdonald grew up influenced by his Congregational Church, with an atmosphere of Calvinism He took his degree at Aberdeen University, and then migrated to London, studying at Highbury College for the Congregational ministry. In he was appointed pastor of Trinity Congregational Church, Arundel, and later was engaged in ministerial work in Manchester. He left that because of poor health, and after a short sojourn in Algiers he settled in London and became an author.

I began by reading Phantastes , which Lewis said had had a strong influence on him as a youth. I liked it a lot, although the type of the copy I had was hard to read and that made it hard to get into the story. Later on I read The Princess and the Goblin and found myself enraptured. This was a real fairy tale. And, more importantly, it had a wonderful aura of goodness that permeated the atmosphere of the story. That led me on to the sequel, The Princess and Curdie , and then The Portent and then some of MacDonald's fairy tales ( The Light Princess The Golden Key , etc.). MacDonald also penned theological writings and Victorian novels, but I haven't yet read any of them. Quotes "Until we love the Lord so as to do what He tells us, we have no right to have an opinion about what one of those men [writers of the N.T. epistles] meant, for all they wrote about is about things beyond us.
