Research Animal Health and Husbandry, Department of Clinical Veterinary Science Langford HouseUniversity of Bristol, BS40 5DU, U.K. email: donal.skinner@bris.ac.uk Progesterone, Gonadotrophin-Releasing Hormone and Cerebrospinal Fluid: An Intimate Relationship My research program during the past 9 years has focused on two separate but intricately linked themes: how photoperiod and gonadal steroids regulate gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion and the function of factors in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). in vitro systems. However, it was obvious that definitive proof would be required using an in vivo not the pars tuberalis, to transduce photoperiodic information to the neuroendocrine reproductive axis. Alliance Having identified the probable initial site of action of melatonin on GnRH secretion, it is necessary to ascertain which neurotransmitter systems are evoked by this indoleamine. However, the neural systems controlling GnRH secretion per se are poorly understood at present. Moreover, given the long duration required to evoke a reproductive response to melatonin, using the effects of melatonin to uncover these systems will be extremely difficult if not impossible. A more precise approach will be to uncover strong evidence for a particular neurotransmitter system and then determine whether melatonin affects this system. Thus, most of my recent and current research has been aimed at elucidating the neurotransmitter systems that regulate GnRH secretion.

Hugh Byrne TD Minister of State responsible for forestry has at last announced details of the new forestry premium and grant package. The announcement comes after months of delay - a delay which has contributed to another dismal season as far as achieving our national planting target of 20,000 hectares is concerned. However, the Minister and his officials must be congratulated on achieving substantial premium increases in what were tough discussions with the European Commission. Ultimately these new higher rates are certain to boost planting figures during future seasons - with ground lost this year proving insignificant in the longer term. Standard rates will now apply for all the land classification areas in the country. ÒAs a result of this levelling up, higher premium levels, previously paid for non-disadvantaged areas only, will now also be paid for new planting in severely handicapped areas. This means larger increases in these severely handicapped areasÓ, according to the Minister. In response to a call from farmers, in particular, who have planted during previous seasons, the Minister said that he and his department will shortly pursue adequate increases for those who planted in earlier years.
