Background Dr. Smith has been with the Kestrel Institute since August 1984. He has also taught a graduate course on Software Development by Refinement. at Stanford University since 1986. Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American Association of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). He was Chairman of IFIP Working Group 2.1 on Algorithmic Languages and Calculi from 1993 through 1999. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Duke University in 1979. Prior to joining Kestrel he held academic positions at the Naval Postgraduate School and managed the basic research program in Artificial Intelligence at the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, Virginia. During 1989 he spent six months on sabbatical with the Programming Research Group, Oxford University. 2. Research Interests Dr. Smith's main research interest has been formalizing and mechanizing the development of software. Related interests include algorithm design, automated deduction, program optimization, data structure design, computational complexity, models of software systems and their design and evolution, and inductive inference. The Port Douglas Restoration Society - A Brief History Port Douglas is located 65km north of Cairns International Airport in Tropical North Queensland, Australia. ( map In 1986, St Mary's was the only church left in Port Douglas and it was in danger of being demolished. St Mary's would not be where it is today had it no been for the initiative and determination of Virginia Donovan and Judi Piat to "save" one of the last historic buildings in Port Douglas. The church building was given to Virginia and Judi by the Catholic Bishop of Cairns provided that the building be put to use as a non-denominational place of worship and for the conduct of weddings, christenings, memorial services and funerals. Judi and Virginia initially formed the "Save the Church" group with some initial generous donations from concerned local residents. The Port Douglas Restoration Society was formed later to assist with fund-raising for the relocation and restoration. The Douglas Shire Council provided the existing site on the undertaking that the relocation work, restoration and ongoing upkeep and maintenance would never become a burden on the Ratepayer. The Restoration Society has never received funds or other assistance from the Council or any other official body.

An Interview with Bill Douglas February 6, 199 1, in Boulder, Colorado by Ronald Klimko Moscow, Idaho [While most of us bassoonists are happy to say we can do a fairly decent job covering the bassoon pan's in a classical composition, every once in awhile a genius like Bill Douglas of Boulder, Colorado, comes along who can seemingly do everything. Bill is a bassoonist, pianist, recording artist, teacher, composer, and world music specialist of the highest order! While on sabbatical leave in Colorado last year, I was fortunate enough to sit in on one of Bill's evening musicianship classes at the Naropa Institute in Boulder where he is Director of Musical Activities and to interview him there. ED.] RK: Bill, you have made a name for yourself as a composer, performer, teacher, bassoonist, pianist, and lately as a New Age recording artist. Could you give us a little bit about your background: where you grew up, your early education, and how you got interested in music? BD: My parents were both musicians-not professional musicians, but my father played trombone in a dance band and my mother played church organ. So when I was age 3, 1 was already totally into music. I had a one-man band with toy instruments and I started playing piano and guitar, or ukelele first, when I was about 4 or 5. 1 had a band with my brothers in the '50s called "The Douglas Brothers" and we did all Elvis songs, the Everly Brothers, and all the rock tunes of the '50s. Elvis was my first hero. I became very involved with classical music and jazz about age 12. 1 was composing my own music by about age 8. 1 started bassoon about the second year of high school-about 14.

Keaton Douglas Keaton Douglas is a singer of unusual versatility. Equally adept at a Verdi aria with full Orchestra, a jazz ballad with piano, a swinging chart with an 18 piece Big Band or a Polish folk song accompanied by a Polka band, Ms. Douglas has wowed tens of thousands in various venues throughout her career. She was delighted to have been asked to perform for President and Mrs. George W. Bush and Vice President and Mrs. Dick Cheney at this year's presidential Inauguration where she was the featured entertainment along with comedian Drew Carey and country singer, Linda Davis. The magnificent Guy Lombardo Orchestra, under the baton of Al Pierson backed Keaton. She has been featured at Birdland, New York City's premiere jazz club, with the Lew Anderson All Star Big Band, as well as Atlantic City's Tropicana Hotel and Casino. She has appeared as an opening act for Jerry Vale, Al Martino, Julius LaRosa and Buddy Greco. She has had the privilege of opening for Ms. Nancy Wilson. She has been a featured artist at the Newark Jazz Festival, and has been featured frequently in the media as the soloist for the Montclair based Diane Moser's composers Big Band. Keaton is available as a single also with piano, trio, quartet and full big band.
