Arthur Conan Doyle, Spiritualism, and Fairies
By Donald E. Simanek While many of Arthur Conan Doyle's books are available as e-text on the Internet, and many web sites are devoted to him and his work, there's scant mention of Doyle's credulous acceptance of spiritualism, fairies and other occult ideas. This is a small effort to remedy that omission. "Modern" spiritualism began in the United States in the mid 19th century. Specifically, it arose in Western New York state, a region known to social historians for the religious fervor which made it a spawning ground for many religious sects. They refer to it as the "infected district" or the "burned over district." Spiritualism was born in the fertile religious fervor of immigrant Swedenborgians, Mesmerists, and other religions, a climate of thought receptive to spiritualist ideas. Mainstream religions promised eternal life, but in an era of emerging science which demanded verifiable physical evidence, many religious persons wished for tangible evidence of the claims of relgion, particularly of claims of an afterlife. The fox home was moved to the
spiritualist camp at Lily Dale, NY

    Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle
Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, 22nd May 1859, to Roman Catholic parents of Irish origin. Educated locally and by the Jesuits at Stonyhurst College, the boy then graduated from Edinburgh University in medicine in 1881. His first short story had been published in Chambers's journal in September 1879, and his first non-fiction in the British medical journal the same month. A crude, unpublished story from this time shows him experimenting with two lead characters, a daring master of arcane scientific perceptions and a down-to-earth narrator inviting audience identification, but it was not until 1886 that the ultimate development of the two types came to life in A Study in scarlet , as the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his fellow-lodger Dr Watson. Their brilliant, ironic, infectious dialogue, to be continued over fifty six short stories and four novels in all, originally derived from Plato 's Socrates and his disciples Cervantes 's Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and James Boswell 's conversations with Dr Samuel Johnson , but many of the initial strokes of characterisation derived from Conan Doyle's medical teachers, fellow-students, and former Jesuit masters.

Chapters: Chapter 1 - There are Heroisms All Round Us Mr. Hungerton, her father, really was the most tactless person upon earth,a fluffy, feathery, untidy cockatoo of a man, perfectly good-natured, but absolutely centered upon his own silly self. If anything could have driven me from Gladys, it would have been the thought of such a father-in-law. I am convinced that he really believed in his heart that I came round to the Chestnuts three days a week for the pleasure of his company, and very especially to hear his views upon bimetallism, a subject upon which he was by way of being an authority. For an hour or more that evening I listened to his monotonous chirrup about bad money driving out good, the token value of silver, the depreciation of the rupee, and the true standards of exchange.

    Arthur Conan Doyle

    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
