- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) One of seven children, Doyle was born on 22 May, 1859, the son and grandson of artists (his grandfather was a political cartoonist in "Punch" magazine). He was educated at Stoneyhurst and studied medicine at Edinburgh University . After a spell as ship's surgeon on a whaling ship, he worked as a doctor from 1882-90 in practices in Southsea and London. But the success of his early fiction encouraged him to give this up and devote himself to writing. His first short story was published in 1879. His early stories such as "A Study in Scarlet" (1887) and "Sign of the Four" (1890) introduced Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson for the first time. Holmes was based on a forensic medicine teacher at Edinburgh University, Dr Joseph Bell. The name Holmes had been derived from the American author Oliver Wendell Holmes. His "The White Company" set in the Hundred Years' War was regarded as one of the outstanding historical novels of his time. But it was "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" published in the Strand Magazine from 1891 to 1893 which gave him immediate, widespread fame. He killed off Holmes in 1893 but he reappeared in

Arthur Conan Doyle Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on 22 May 1859. His mother, Mary, was of Irish extraction and traced her ancestry back to the famous Percy family of Northumberland and from there to the Plantagenet line. It is little wonder that the young Conan Doyle was told tales steeped in history which were to stand him in good stead when, in later years, he was to write his famous historical novels, The White Company Sir Nigel , and Micah Clarke Although the world has chosen to remember Sir Arthur Conan Doyle chiefly for his creation of the fictional master detective, Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle's life, like the literary canvas he painted, was varied and highly interesting. The effect of his father's alcoholism on Conan Doyle was profound and, whilst he chose to draw a veil over this particular topic in his autobiography Memories and Adventures , alcoholism is dealt with rather severely when it appears in his later fictional work. A Study in Scarlet , which appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887.

Best known as creator of perhaps the most famous detective in fiction, Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh. After an education spent at Educated at Stonyhurst College and Edinburgh University he started his practice as doctor in 1882 but had to abandon it relatively soon following the enormous success of his creation, Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in A Study in Scarlet in 1887. Initially the character did not have such an impact on people until the short stories, later included in the Adventures , began to be published in the Strand Magazine . Doyle wrote also other mysteries ( The Doings of Raffles Haw The Mystery of Cloomber and The Surgeon of Gaster Fell ), collections of short stories, historical romances and history books on the Boer War and World War I. Unfortunately it was not the creation of Holmes that gave him the most satisfaction and Doyle was particularly annoyed that the success of his creation hindered his career as historian. He was knighted in 1902 for his activity in the Boer War. Doyle died in Crowborough, Sussex, England, on July 7, 1930.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
What a debt we all owe to Arthur Conan Doyle's creation of Sherlock Holmes, one of the most exciting figures in all of English fiction, not to mention Holmes' lovable, genial companion Dr. Watson and his archenemy, the evil Professor Moriarty. Indeed, so fixed a part of our lives have these characters become that thousands and thousands of visitors come each year from all parts of the globe to visit 221B Baker Street in London to see where they believe Holmes lived and worked. There is a tavern nearby, " The Sherlock Holmes " that has a small upstairs exhibition of the fictional detectives pipe, deerstalker hat and so on. We can dismiss the rest of Conan Doyle's writings and we can only be amused by his belief in the supernatural and paranormal (he could be easily fooled by even the most amateur spiritualist and charlatan, as Houdini was to discover).
Doyle's stories about the eccentric, but brilliant detective and his unfailing powers of perception were apparently based on one of his teachers at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied medicine. They first appeared in A Study in Scarlet (1887). Evidence of his own medical training at Edinburgh surfaces from time to time in Doyle's detective stories. The instructor was greatly admired for his deductive reasoning, an attribute for which Sherlock Holmes was to become famous (Doyle then contributed additional stories in the Strand Magazine). When the writer killed off his famous detective in 1893, public demand made his restoration inevitable.

(from The Five Orange Pips
It was in the latter days of September, and the equinoctial gales had set in with exceptional violence. All day the wind had screamed and the rain had beaten against the windows, so that even here in the heart of great, hand-made London we were forced to raise our minds for the instant from the routine of life, and to recognize the presence of those great elemental forces which shriek at mankind through the bars of his civilization, like untamed beasts in a cage. As evening drew in, the storm grew higher and louder, and the wind cried and sobbed like a child in the chimney. Sherlock Holmes sat moodily at one side of the fireplace cross-indexing his records of crime, while I at the other was deep in one of Clark Russell's fine sea-stories until the howl of the gale from without seemed to blend with the text, and the splash of the rain to lengthen out into the long swash of the sea waves.

Updated - Sunday, 2 September, 2001 British writer, creator Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of sharp reasoning. Doyle (1859-1930) himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world. 'This is indeed a mystery,' I remarked. 'What do you imagine that it means?'
'I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts...'
(from A Scandal in Bohemia Arthur Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was eventually institutionalized. Charles Altamot died in an asylum in 1893; in the same year Doyle decided to finish permanently the adventures of his master detective. Because of financial problems, Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Dr. Tsukasa Kobayashi has alluded in an article, that Doyle's mother had a long affair with Bryan Charles Waller, a lodger and a student of pathology, who had a deep impact to Conan Doyle.

AUTHOR PROFILE
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle(1859-1930) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best known for his creation of the brilliantly eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes. He was born in Edinburgh on 22 May 1859, one of ten children. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh from 1876 to 1881. Besides providing him with a medical degree, Edinburgh University also brought Conan Doyle into contact with two characters who were to be important models for future fictional creations: Professor Rutherford, whose Assyrian beard, remarkable voice and curious manner became translated into Professor George Edward Challenger of The Lost World ; and Dr Joseph Bell, whose amazing deductions concerning the history of his patients were to provide the ideas behind the deductive skills of Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes' first appearance was in A Study in Scarlet which was published in the year 1887 and for which Conan Doyle was paid a paltry sum of £25.

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was knighted in 1902, there was some speculation that the honor was bestowed to recognize his achievement in The Hound of the Baskervilles. But the more seemly prelude was his pamphlet, The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct, The Sign of the Four, has some of the elements of the adventure story for boys, with its recollection of the bloody Indian Sepoy Rebellion of 1857. Among the most notable of his historical adventures are The White Company (1891) and Sir Nigel (1906). Conan Doyle, trained in medicine and with a sharp eye for scientific and logical plausibility, also wrote a number of science fiction stories. The character Professor Challenger of 1912's The Lost World, about living remnants of the prehistoric world, did not match Holmes in popularity, but he did inspire a large following himself, and he appeared again in other science fiction adventures, including The Poison Belt in 1913, and a collection of stories published posthumously in 1952. Upon his death in 1930, Conan Doyle left his family with the conviction that he would surely communicate with them from the spirit world which he held so dear.
