Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), well-known Scottish author and physician. Doyle wrote 4 novels and 5 collections of short stories about Sherlock Holmes, one of the first, and certainly the most famous, of fictional detectives. Holmes is a consulting detective, living in London, constantly solving crimes that baffle the police. He combines brilliant deductive reasoning with a cold, arrogant detachment toward his cases and clients that frequently amazes his sidekick and biographer, Dr. John Watson. Doyle was a prolific author, and there are many short stories and novels not about Holmes. A few of these have mystery elements; many are thrillers or historical fiction. You can read a brief biography of Conan Doyle.

Arthur Conan Doyle Memorial
Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan (1859-1930), British physician, novelist, and detective-story writer, creator of the unforgettable master sleuth Sherlock Holmes.
Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh and educated at Stonyhurst College and the University of Edinburgh. From 1882 to 1890 he practiced medicine in Southsea, England. A Study in Scarlet, the first of 68 stories featuring Sherlock Holmes, appeared in 1887. The characterization of Holmes, his ability of ingenious deductive reasoning, was based on one of the author's own university professors. Equally brilliant creations are those of Holmes's foils: his friend Dr. Watson, the good-natured if bumbling narrator of the stories, and the master criminal Professor Moriarty. Conan Doyle was so immediately successful in his literary career that approximately five years later he abandoned his medical practice to devote his entire time to writing.
Some of the best known of the Holmes stories are The Sign of Four (1890), The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), and His Last Bow (1917). They made Conan Doyle internationally famous and served to popularize the detective-story genre (see Detective Story; Mystery Story). A Holmes cult arose and still flourishes, notably through clubs of devotees such as the Baker Street Irregulars. Conan Doyle's literary versatility brought him almost equal fame for his historical romances such as Micah Clarke (1888), The White Company (1890), Rodney Stone (1896), and Sir Nigel (1906), and for his play A Story of Waterloo (1894).

Brothers Judd Top 100 of the 20th Century: Novels
Author Info: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
I'd be happy to argue the point, but it seems to me that the four greatest fictional characters of all time (excluding Don Quijote , who's in a league of his own) are : Frankenstein's monster , Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and Tarzan . There are certainly no other characters who are so familiar, so often revived in plays, movies, song, television, and books, nor so often parodied and imitated as they. Take a look at your TV Guide and there'll be a movie featuring at least one of the four on the air at some point this week. They are all still just as popular as the day their authors introduced them. The reason for this is, first of all that they are simply brilliant creations, but secondly that they each in their own way tap into very powerful human fears and aspirations. Frankenstein's monster and Dracula represent victory over mortality. Tarzan represents victory over Nature. Sherlock Holmes represents the ultimate and inevitable triumph of reason over the mysteries of human behavior. Of this quartet, it is Holmes, because he is the most realistic character and because his victory seems closest to our grasp, who resonates most deeply with us. Realistically, none of us expect to gain eternal life nor to be plopped down in the jungle unexpectedly, but there's a sense in Holmes that, for all his genius, he is really just using the brain power that all of us share better than the rest of us do. As he tells Watson here, after one of his those classic moments where the good Doctor is stunned by one of Holmes's analyses :

A PARABLE by: Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
HE cheese-mites asked how the cheese got there,
    And warmly debated the matter;
The Orthodox said that it came from the air,
And the Heretics said from the platter.
They argued it long and they argued it strong,
    And I hear they are arguing now;
But of all the choice spirits who lived in the cheese,
Not one of them thought of a cow.

A TRAGEDY by: Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
HO'S that walking on the moorland?
Who's that moving on the hill?
They are passing 'mid the bracken,
But the shadows grow and blacken
And I cannot see them clearly on the hill.
Who's that calling on the moorland?
Who's that crying on the hill?
Was it bird or was it human,
Was it child, or man, or woman,
Who was calling so sadly on the hill?
Who's that running on the moorland?
Who's that flying on the hill?
He is there and there again,
But you cannot see him plain,
For the shadow lies so darkly on the hill.
What's that lying in the heather?
What's that lurking on the hill?
My horse will go no nearer,
And I cannot see it clearer,
But there's something that is lying on the hill.

Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world. 'This is indeed a mystery,' I remarked. 'What do you imagine that it means?'
'I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts...'

(from 'A Scandal in Bohemia', 1891) Arthur Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. To increase his income Charles Altamont painted, made book illustrations, and also worked as a sketch artist on criminal trials. Not long after arriving Edinburgh he started to drink, he suffered from epilepsy and was eventually institutionalized. Doyle's mother was interested in literature, and she encouraged his son to take to books. Doyle read voluminously. At the age of fourteen he had learned French so that he read

DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan
Born: May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland Died: July 7, 1930, in Crowborough, Sussex, England Arthur Conan Doyle was the creator of the popular super sleuth, Sherlock Holmes and his tales of sleuthing launched a whole new genre of writing, that of the detective story. His writing drew heavily from the style of Edgar Allan Poe. Doyle was born to Irish Catholic parents in 1859 and was educated by Jesuits in both Austria and England. He went on to attend Stonyhurst College and the University of Edinburgh where, in 1881, he received his degree in medicine. After graduation, he gained employment as ship's surgeon on a whaling ship destined for the Arctic. When he returned, he settled in Southsea, England where he practiced medicine from 1882 to 1890. In 1887, Doyle's now famous sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, was introduced in a lackluster story titled A Study in Scarlet . Doyle had fashioned the private investigator on a professor he'd had during his days at University, Dr. Joseph Bell. Bell, however, consistently denied being inspiration for the character. Despite the first story's poor showing, Doyle was convinced to continue the series. He wrote the novelette

Arno Forsius. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859—1930) ja Sherlock Holmes.Arthur Conan Doyle syntyi vuonna 1859 Edinburghissa, Skotlannissa
http://www.saunalahti.fi/arnoldus/doyle.html
