The American Flag
Joseph Rodman Drake
When Freedom from her mountain height Unfurled her standard to the air She tore the azure robe of night And set the stars of glory there! She mingled with its gorgeous dyes The milky baldric of the skies, And striped its pure celestial white With streakings of the morning light; Then, from his mansion in the sun, She called her eagle-bearer down, And gave into his mighty hand, The symbol of her chosen land. Flag of the brave! thy folds shall fly The sign of hope and triumph high! When speaks the signal-trumpet tone And the long line comes gleaming on. Ere yet the life-blood, warm and wet, Has dimmed the glistening bayonet Each soldier eye shall brightly turn To where thy sky-born glories burn, And as his springing steps advance, Catch war and vengeance from the glance; And when the cannon-mouthings loud Heaven in wild wreaths the battle-shroud And gory sabers rise and fall, Like shoots of flame on midnight's pall; Then shall thy meteor-glances glow, And cowering foes shall sink beneath Each gallant arm that strikes below That lovely messenger of death.

From The Sonnet in American Literature
No sonnets by Joseph Rodman Drake are found in The Culprit and Other Poems , which purports to be Drake's complete verse. The sonnet reprinted here is quoted by Duyckinck [Duyckinck: "Cyclopedia of American Literature," Phila., 1881, Vol. I, p. 930] as by Drake, with the note that this and several other poems were not included in the 1835 edition. Thorough search has revealed no earlier source.
Sonnet
Is thy heart weary of unfeeling men,
And chilled with the world's ice? Then come with me,
And I will bring thee to a pleasant glen
Lovely and lonely. There we'll sit, unviewed
By scoffing eye; and let our hearts beat free
With their own mutual throb. For wild and rude
The access is, and none will there intrude,
To poison our free thoughts, and mar our solitude!
Such scenes move not their feelingsfor they hold
No fellowship with nature's loneliness;
The frozen wave reflects not back the gold
And crimson flushes of the sunset hour;
The rock lies cold in sunshinenot the power
Of heaven's bright orb can clothe its barrenness.

Nineteenth Century American Sonnets
For some commentary on the American sonnet through 1930, see a General Survey of the American Sonnet by Lewis Sterner. The first American sonnets were written by the Revolutionary War general David Humphreys in the last quarter of the 18th century and were not published until 1804. Some of the better known American sonneteers of mid-century were Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) (the Romantic link in the Sonnet Central chain), William Cullen Bryant Henry Wadsworth Longfellow John Greenleaf Whittier Jones Very ... Frederick Goddard Tuckerman (1821-1873), and Emma Lazarus (1849-1887). Also included here are many works by lesser known poets. Many of these more obscure works are taken from late 19th century anthologies, so any help with years of birth/death for the writers listed at the bottom of the page is appreciated. Here are some selections from the introduction to American Sonnets (1889), edited by William Sharp "It is, therefore, significant that in contemporary American verse, technically inferior to our own [British] as, in the main, it undoubtedly is, the motives The career of George Santayana (1863-1952), like that of Thomas Hardy, bridged the centuries; included here are his philosophical sonnets from the late 1800s.

    THE AMERICAN FLAG by: Joseph Rodman Drake (1795-1820) I
      HEN Freedom, from her mountain height,
      Unfurled her standard to the air,
      She tore the azure robe of night,
      And set the stars of glory there;
      She mingled with its gorgeous dyes
      The milky baldric of the skies,
      And striped its pure, celestial white
      With streakings of the morning light;
      Then, from his mansion in the sun,
      She called her eagle bearer down,
      And gave into his mighty hand,
      The symbol of her chosen land.
      II
      Majestic monarch of the cloud!
      Who rear'st aloft thy regal form,
      To hear the tempest-trumpings loud,
      And see the lightning-lances driven
      When strive the warriors of the storm,
      And rolls the thunder-drum of heaven
      Child of the sun! to thee 't is given
      To guard the banner of the free,
      To hover in the sulphur smoke,
      To ward away the battle-stroke,
      And bid its blendings shine afar,
      Like rainbows on the cloud of war,
      The harbingers of victory!
      III
      Flag of the brave! thy folds shall fly,
      The sign of hope and triumph high,
      When speaks the signal-trumpet tone
