Hollander, John The Gazer's Spirit Poems Speaking to Silent Works of Art . 408 p., 8 color plates, 70 halftones. 7 x 10 1995 Cloth $45.00 0-226-34949-7 Fall 1995 This magnificent book is a gallery of words and images that celebrates the sister arts of poetry and painting. John Hollander, the eminent poet and critic, has selected more than fifty works of artpaintings, prints, drawings, photographs, and sculptures from antiquity to the presentand matched them to poems that address the same images in their verses. The result is an illuminating and ingeniously organized chronicle of words and images in conversation, as well as a powerful introduction to how, across Western culture, great writers have been inspired by pictures. The Gazer's Spirit focuses on leading examples of ecphrastic poetry, or poems that directly confront particular works of art. Hollander, who is one of the most distinguished contemporary practitioners of the ecphrastic tradition, has crafted a survey of enormous range, taste, and depth, from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. The heart of the book is its gallery of poems and images set side by side. There are poems whose presence in this book is all but inevitable, such as Auden's "Musee des Beaux Arts" paired with Breugel the Elder's

The American Flag
by Joseph Rodman Drake - (1795-1820)

When Freedom from her mountain height
Unfurled her standard to the air,
She tore the azure robe of night,
And set the stars of glory there;
She mingled with its gorgeous dyes
The milky baldric of the skies,
And striped its pure, celestial white
With streakings of the morning light;
Then from his mansion in the sun She called her eagle bearer down, And gave into his mighty hand The symbol of her chosen land. Majestic monarch of the cloud! Who rear'st aloft thy regal form, To hear the tempest-trumpings loud, And see the lightning lances driven, When strive the warriors of the storm, And rolls the thunder-drum of heaven Child of the sun! to thee 'tis given To guard the banner of the free, To hover in the sulphur smoke, To ward away the battle-stroke, And bid its blendings shine afar, Like rainbows on the cloud of war, The harbingers of victory! Flag of the brave! thy folds shall fly, The sign of hope and triumph high, When speaks the signal trumpet tone, And the long line comes gleaming on; Ere yet the life-blood, warm and wet

Poe's Literary Criticism
Since most of the literary criticism of Poe's era is unsigned, attribution is a complex and divisive issue. All items included here have been attributed to Poe at one time or another, but are subject to further analysis as our project proceeds. In general, uncertain attributions are noted by the presence of a question mark ("?"), with more question marks ("?") being used to denote less certain items. A few doubtful items are included merely because they have not been disproven. Again, these marks are not definitive at this stage. At the end of each selection, beyond the "End of Text" tag, is a code, such as "[S:1]". This code is intended as an internal marker for keeping track of verification of the text. In general, a value of "[S:0]" or the total absence of the code notes that the text has been entered, but not yet verified. Anyone who has ever tried to proofread a large volume of text will appreciate the inherent difficulties.

The Collections and Books:
During his lifetime, Poe planned, but never published a collection of his literary notices. A posthumous collection, edited by Rufus Wilmot Griswold, incorporates a few of his reviews, taken from the material Poe had accumulated for "Literary America." These collections are listed chronologically.

Cover Information
Taken from the back of the paperback edition "Spenser had gone to Londonand not to look at the Queen. He'd gone to track down a bunch of bombers who'd blown his client's wife and kids away. His job was to catch them. Or kill them. His client wasn't choosy. But there were nine killers to one Spenserlong odds that could add up to a short life. Hawk, the iron-fisted Boston enforcer, would help balance the equation. The rest would depend upon a wild plan. Spenser would get one of the terrorists to play Judas Goatto lead him to the others. Trouble was, he hadn't counted on her being very blond, very beautiful, and very, very dangerous."
Recurring Characters
  • Hawk is the only recurring character that has any significant presence in TJG. He and Spenser discuss Detective Lieutenant Martin Quirk and Henry Cimoli as men who know "how a man acts". Spenser and Hawk spend a good deal of time together, and further define their relationship in the process. Spenser mentions the incident in

John Shaw Collection Notes on Authors As he built his collection, John Shaw compiled a large number of notes concerning the authors of children's materials and poetry. These notes were primarily biographical in nature and were sometimes used to justify the inclusion of a certain author in the Collection. This finding aid is a valuable tool in identifying a large portion of the authors whose works are included in the Shaw Collection. The Shaw Collection is in the process of being cataloged, and many of the works of the authors listed below are at the present moment uncataloged. As works are cataloged, this finding aid will be updated to provide the user with the call number of materials representative of a certain author. Beside each author's entry below, a call number will appear preceded by "CL" The notes included in this collection are arranged alphabetically by author's last name or by subject. To find a particular author quickly, use the Find or equivalent command that is common in most web browsers. Shaw Box 1605 Folder 1
