Theodore Dreiser Dreiser was born in 1871, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He attended Indiana University. Before becomming an author, he became the editor of a music magazine in New York City. His style lacks grace, but his best stories are powerful and sobering. The characters in his stories are victims of meaningless incidents, which result in pressures that they can neither understand nor control. His brother, Paul Dreiser wrote " On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away." Dreiser's family was very poor and this made him realize the difference between the promise and the reality of American life. This experience affected his work greatly. Findings in biology and psychology helped him uphold the principle that human behavior was determined not by free will but by social forces, unconscious minds, and body chemistry. Along with novels, he wrote short stories, essays, plays,and memoirs. Some of his novels are: Sister Carrie, The Titan, The "Genius", The Bulwark, and The Stoic.

Theodore Dreiser, author of Sister Carrie, was the first voice to be heard as American literature entered the twentieth century. His reportorial vision and his message that outside forces direct human affairs were a continuation of the trend toward realism and naturalism first presented in the works of William Dean Howells, Henry James, Stephen Crane, and Frank Norris (see The Best of American Fiction: Early Period, minibibliography no. Theodore Dreiser Dreiser (1871-1945) is still considered one of the great American realists, or naturalists. His novels deal with everyday life, often with its sordid side. The characters who people his novels, unable to assert their will against natural and economic forces, are mixtures of good and bad, but he seldom passes judgment on them. He describes them and their actions in massive detail. As Dreiser sees them, human beings are not tragic but pathetic in their inability to escape their petty fates. In the end the sheer weight and power of the author's conviction compel the reader to share his compassionate vision. Born in small-town Indiana, Dreiser rebelled as a youth against the poverty and narrowness of the life around him. One of his high school teachers recognized his talent and paid his tuition at Indiana University. But Dreiser left college after a year because he felt it "did not concern ordinary life at all." He had various jobs in Chicago: washing dishes, shoveling coal, working in a factory, and collecting bills¡Xexperiences which he later used in his writing. He taught himself to be a newspaper reporter and supported himself as a journalist and editor for many years while he was struggling to become recognized as a novelist.

Dreiser supported himself from the age of fifteen, spending one year at Indiana University before obtaining a job as a reporter with the Chicago Globe . He read the works of late-nineteenth-century scientists and social scientists such as Charles Darwin and Thomas Huxley who agreed that human evolution was based upon the principle of the "survival of the fittest." Fascinated by human destinies and motives, Dreiser addressed the tension between determinism and human compassion in his fiction. Several of his brothers and sisters would later rescue Dreiser at low points in his career - two of his protagonists were based on sisters, and his brother, Paul, sent Dreiser to a resort when he was broke. A high school teacher paid to send him to Indiana University for one year, but Dreiser did not fit in, and he left college to become a reporter. Newspapering took him to Chicago, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and New York City, where he gathered his first observations of the American cities that would play large roles in his upcoming novels. Dreiser's novels are prime examples of literary naturalism, with characters driven by selfish motives and influenced by the privileges and limitations of social class. He was often criticized for telling amoral tales that could outrage readers or convince them that bad decisions would be rewarded. Among his most significant influences are Herbert Spencer and Honore de Balzac. Dreiser was a finalist for the Nobel Prize in 1930; when Sinclair Lewis won, he acknowledged Dreiser in his speech.
