THE REALITY OF SIN
If you want to be chic these days, do not talk about sin. Sin is not an acceptable topic of conversation in most circles. It's okay to converse about pathologies, inimical environmental effects, or negative physiological and/or psychological influences when dealing with what used to be called sin. But most people seem to agree that sin itself is passé, an antediluvian idiom, a nasty, obscene term. I wonder. Is sin only an apocryphal allegory, a mythic part of the dim past? Jesus, whom we believe to be true, real, and part of the present, not the past, doesn't seem to think so. Jesus seems to think that sin is, that sin exists. Jesus knows that sin is more than individual sins, more than the sum of individual sins. Jesus sees sin as an oil slick, quick to defile innocent shores; as an asphyxiating weed, bound to choke fresh-sown seed. Jesus took sin seriously, seriously enough to combat it far and wide, to combat it as far as the cross.
We can take up Jesus' crusade against the evil of sin. And we can do it without fear; first of all, because Jesus triumphed on the cross; and second, because we have the powerful word of God as our protection and safeguard. God's word does what it says: It vanquishes sin, it leads to redemption. It requires us only to be receptive to it, to nourish it, to bring it to bloom in our lives. No matter what, no matter our failings and puny faith, God's word will not return fruitless. Nevertheless, to return in full blossom, God's word must be "spoken" by human mouths, enacted by human hands, lived out in human lives.

Personal Names Index to the Writings
of Alfred Russel Wallace

The following compilation represents an index of personal names (and a few organizations) that appeared in Wallace's writings. To produce the index I examined every page of every item listed in the "Wallace Bibliography" list, keeping track both of each name that appeared, and how many times it appeared. Only those names that Wallace referred to in more than simple citation terms are included (i.e., names that appeared as part of systematic synonymies, straight citations, etc. are not included unless Wallace also mentioned the persons involved in some further fashion in the main text of his writing). Once I had a "raw" list of names, I attempted to verify and/or distinguish the persons involved using various reference tools (Wallace often refers to people by their last name only, so a few errors are possible in this regard).
The editions of the books indexed here are as follows: Palm Trees of the Amazon S713 (original 1853 edition);

a small wooden or brass cylinder with a vellum at each end. The parchments are lapped over small hoops and pressed firmly down by larger hoops. As in the bass drum, these and the vellums are tightened or slackened by means of cords and leather braces, or by a system of rods and screws. AcIoss the lower head are stretched two or more catgut strings called snares, which produce a rattling sound at each stroke on the upper head, owing to the sympathetic vibration of the lower head which jars against the snares. The upper head, set in vibration by FIG. 2.—Guards pattern FIG. 3.—Regulation Side direct percussion from the sticks, induces sympathetic vibrations in the air contained within the resonating receptacle, and these vibrations are communicated to the lower head. The presence of the snares across the diameter of the latter produces a phenomenon which gives the side drum its peculiar timbre, changing the nature of the vibrations, now no longer free: the snares lorm a kind of nodal contact, inducing double the number of vibrations and a sound approximately an octave higher than would be the case were the heads left to vibrate freely. Moreover, the vibrations of the upper head being weaker, the latter is compelled to vibrate synchronously with the lower vellum.i II ~ r r r Lr_u tr’~si. H

Drummond’s first publication appeared in 1613, an elegy on the death of Henry, prince of Wales, called Teares on the Death of Meliades (Moeliades, 3rd edit. 1614). The poem shows the influence of Spenser’s and Sidney’s pastoralism. In the same year he published an anthology of the elegies of Chapman, Wither and others, entitled Mausoleum, or’ The C’hoisest Flowres of the Epitaphs. In 1616, the year of Shakespeare’s death, appeared Poems: Amorous, Funerall, Div~ne,1 Pastorall: in Sonnets, Songs, Sextains, Madrigals, being substantially the

Henry Drummond Author of the multi-million selling inspirational meditation "The Greatest Thing in the World"
WHO WAS HENRY DRUMMOND?....Born in Scotland in 1851, he was a man of varied talents. Perhaps best remembered as a gifted evangelist who assisted Dwight L. Moody during his revival campaigns, he was also a lecturer in natural science. Although he never received a degree, he was an ordained minister and a professor of theology. He also wrote several books. "Natural Law in the Spiritual World", published in 1883, sold 70,000 copies in five years and made him famous. He published another popular book, "Tropical Africa", after making a geological survey of southern Africa. "The Ascent of Man" was also a significant book during his lifetime. However, "The Greatest Thing in the World" - a meditation he wrote in 1874 that illuminates the importance of 1 Corinthians 13 - is the one that assured he would be remembered by later generations. Widely read and quoted during his lifetime, it went on to sell over 12 million copies and it continues today to influence people to follow God's two great commandments: to love God and to love each other. Vern Overlee was unexpectedly opened to the World of Spirit in 1959 by a man, who died in 1782 in Nepal. His name is Mohabis . Mohabis suddenly grabbed control of Overlee's arm and forcefully started writing. The writings were of a serious, intelligent nature, such as this statement, "God is the good in man and the good in man is God". Overlee soon found that he could safely let Mohabis write through him by saying an opening prayer, which opened him to the World of Spirit. When Spirit is finished using him, he shuts himself off by saying a closing prayer. After writing through Overlee for three years, Mohabis wrote "I will bring others". Mohabis' writing stopped and was immediately replaced by
