He came of a Puritan family, which had been for years very active in the political world. Dryden was sent to school at Westminster. He published some verses at the age of eighteen. In 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, and took a degree of B.A. four years later, but it is probable that he spent also the next three years at Cambridge. He went to London in 1657. His first important literary effort, Heroic Stanzas to the memory of Cromwell, was published in 1659. This was followed the next year by verses on the return of Charles. In order to add to his slender income, he turned to the stage, and after two unsuccessful attempts he produced his first play, The Wild Gallant , in 1663. This comedy was not well received, and Dryden confesses that his forte was not comedy. The same year he produced

John Dryden (1631-1700) John Dryden, the first of the great English neo-classical poets, warmly admired Chaucer, whom he regarded as the founder of English verse, an equal to the great poets of classical antiquity. At the end of his life Dryden produced The Fables , translations of works by Ovid and Chaucer. His Preface to The Fables is famous for its appreciative criticism of Chaucer "Here is God's Plenty" has become the ultimate characterization of Chaucer's art. It also provides some interesting insights on the state of English poetry at its time and Chaucer's stature in that canon. For excerpts see: The Preface to The Fables Dryden translated The Knight's Tale, The Nun's Priest's Tale, and The Wife of Bath's Tale. To read these tales in heroic couplets and neo-classical style tells a good deal about Dryden and his times; if, as Frost said, "poetry is what gets left out in translation," the translations also provide a means of defining, and perhaps undertanding, the characteristics of Chaucer's own poetic style. See: The Wife of Bath, Her Tale

John Dryden John Dryden, an English poet and dramatist who would dominate literary efforts of The Restoration , was born on August 19, 1631, in Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, England. He received a classical education at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, then moved to London in 1657 to commence his career as a professional writer. His first play, The Wild Gallant (1663), was a failure when first presented, but Dryden soon found more success with The Indian Queen (1664) which he co-authored with Sir Robert Howard and which served as his initial attempt to found a new theatrical genre, the heroic tragedy. Although George Villiers' The Rehearsal , a vicious satire of heroic tragedy, brought a quick end to the form, Dryden still managed to produce a number of successful works in this genre including The Indian Emperor (1665) and Secret Love (1667) which mixed heroic tragedy with contemporary comedy. The young playwright's reputation grew quickly, and in 1668, only ten years after his move to London, Dryden was appointed Poet Laureate of England. (He was later stripped of the title because of religious differences when William and Mary came into power.) That same year, he agreed to write exclusively for Thomas Killigrew's theatrical company and became a shareholder. Both his first offering

Preface to The Fables (1700) [Translations of Ovid and Chaucer]
[Dryden translates The Knight's Tale, the Nun's Priest's Tale, The Wife of Bath's Tale, and The Flower and The Leaf (then thought to be Chaucer's), and The character of a Good Parson, based on (rather than translated from) the portrait of the Parson in the General Prologue.] Chaucer and Ovid Compared Both of them built on the Inventions of other Men; yet since Chaucer had something of his own, as The Wife of Baths Tale, The Cock and the Fox, which I have translated, and some others, I may justly give our Countryman the Precedence in that Part; since I can remember nothing of Ovid which was wholly his. Both of them understood the Manners; under which Name I comprehend the Passions, and, in a larger Sense, the Descriptions of Persons, and their very Habits: For an Example, I see Baucis and Philemon as perfectly before me, as if some ancient Painter had drawn them; and all the Pilgrims in the Canterbury Tales, their Humours, their Features, and the very Dress, as distinctly as if I had supp'd with them at the Tabard in Southwark: Yet even there, too, the Figures of Chaucer are much more lively, and set in a better Light: Which though I have not time to prove; yet I appeal to the Reader, and am sure he will clear me from Partiality. The Styles of Chaucer and Ovid

Centuries in Literature John Dryden "My conversation is slow and dull; my humour saturine and reserved; in short, I am none of those who endeavour to break jests in company, or make reparties." Dryden Despite his popularity during the Restoration and even today, little is known about John Dryden except what is contained in his works. Because Dryden wrote from the beginning through the end of the Restoration period, following his career is like following the history of English society during this time. In fact, many literary scholars consider the end of the Restoration period to have occurred with Dryden's death in 1700. Dryden was the first born of fourteen to Puritan parents on 9 August 1631. In 1659, Dryden published his first writing entitled "Heroique Stanzas to the Glorious Memory of Cromwell." Then, in 1660, he wrote "Astraea Redux," another poem, but this one celebrated "the happy Restoration and return" of Charles II.

JOHN DRYDEN This article was originally published in A Short History of the Theatre . Martha Fletcher Bellinger. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1927. pp. 252-3. I N the history of the drama Dryden occupies a peculiar place. He had no great genius for the theater, and yet he imposed his ideas upon the English play-going world. He was that unusual product, a politician with a poetical mind. For a time he was attached to the Puritans, and wrote an ode on the death of Cromwell; but, on the accession of Charles, he found no difficutly in transferring his muse to the royalist party. Towards the end of his stormy life he became a Roman Catholic. Soon after the accession of William and Mary, the queen, as a mark of honor to the poet, ordered a performance of The Spanish Fryar , one of his best comedies. Among his last writings is rather an apologetic answer to Jeremy Collier's attack upon the stage. He died in May, 1700, and was buried in Westminster Abbey in the grave of Chaucer. He bequeathed his "dramatic laurels" to William Congreve Although Dryden began his career as a playwright with the production of two or three comedies, yet it was in heroic drama that he achieved his great popularity. A brother-in-law, Sir Robert Howard, wrote a play called
