Dumas, Alexandre
Dumas was a prolific writer; about 1200 volumes were published under his name. Although many were the result of collaboration or the production of a "fiction factory" in which hired writers executed his ideas, almost all the writing bears the unmistakable imprint of his personal genius and inventiveness.
Dumas's earnings were enormous but scarcely sufficient in his later years to sustain his extravagant style of living. He spent great sums of money in maintaining his estate outside Paris (Monte-Cristo), supporting numerous mistresses (one of whom was the mother of his son Alexandre), purchasing artworks, and making up the losses incurred by numerous business ventures. At his death, on December 5, 1870, he was virtually bankrupt.
Besides his historical novels, the works of Dumas include the plays Antony (1831), La tour de Nesle (The Tower of Nesle, 1832), Catherine Howard (1834), and L'Alchimiste (The Alchemist, 1839), as well as numerous dramatizations of his own fiction. He also wrote memoirs, which give a vivid picture of his times.

Dumas traveled extensively during his lifetime throughout all of Europe. In 1846, he took his son to Spain and North Africa. His son, Alexandre Dumas fils, was also a writer of novels. His themes were more moralistic and tragic. Dumas made and lost several fortunes. He gave away money to anyone in need and used much of it to defend his writings in a variety of lawsuits. He was the founder of several periodicals and active in politics. His pursuit of women was legendary. Alexandre Dumas was a unique, distinctive, creative individual for any era. His popularity continues today through film and television productions of the characters he created many years ago. He died of a stroke in 1870 and a statue was dedicated in his honor in Paris in 1883.

Born in Villers-Cotterets, near Paris, his father was one of Napoleon 's generals. After several failures as a playwright, Dumas wrote `Henri III '. Performed in Paris in 1829 it turned to be a great success. Dumas became then prominent as one of the leaders of the Romantic movement. His activities were intense: he wrote hundreds of novels, hired collaborators, added material here and there to their work, changed the plot and characters, and gave the works the charm and movement that made his novels popular. Dumas earnings were fabulous, but he was a great spender too, with an intense night life and myriads of love affairs. His personal wish to be elected at the Academie Francaise was fulfilled in the person of his illigitimate son, Alexandre Dumas (fils), author of La Dame aux Camelias that inspired Verdi's Traviata. ~ Alexandre Dumas French novelist and dramatist Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870), born on this day in Paris , was the grandson of a Haitian slave. "Great is truth " he said, "Fire cannot burn it nor water drown it." Self-educated, he was said to have been inspired by the Caribbean escapades of his father, a mulatto general in Napoleon 's army who died when Dumas was four years old. Dumas is best known for writing The Three Musketeers (1844), the adventures of four heroes living during the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. His swashbuckling work helped create the historical novel genre. "The chains of wedlock are so heavy it takes two people to carry them, sometimes three," he wrote. Influenced by the plays of William Shakespeare and fiction of Sir Walter Scott, Dumas' novels were romantic and passionate "You should not attempt to outwit a woman ," he wrote. His popular stories blended fiction and fact and dealt with universal themes: The ideals of youth... Thirst for glory... Excitement of worlds to conquer... Urgency of heroic causes to defend... Willingness to risk it all for friendship or love Happiness is like those palaces in fairy tales whose gates are guarded by dragons. We must fight in order to conquer it," said the fast-writing, fast-living author of 250
