Introduction
The many film versions of The Three Musketeers have made the names Athos, Porthos, Aramis and d'Artagnan known to many people who have never read any of the works of Dumas. However, these films can give a very mistaken and incomplete impression of the original novels. Even the texts themselves can be a source of confusion, as various publishers break the series into separate books at different points, and the ubiquitous abridged versions vary radically in what an editor deems important enough to keep. (Step one to reading Dumas: Avoid all abridged versions! You will be less confused by reading all those asides than you would be by skipping huge chunks of story.) Through his fiction, Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) [called "pere" to distinguish him from his son, Alexandre Dumas "fils"] sought to recreate France's "golden age" (itself something of a fiction) by creating heroes whose lives were defined by honor. The Musketeers' actions are ruled by the demands of honor, whether those actions are to obey the King's orders, to love and defend worthy women, or to duel with those who dare to question their prowess or honor. Even when the heroes are led into committing crimes, they do so because honor demanded it. These books form the epitome of swashbuckling action and intrigue; in fact, Dumas is probably the writer most responsible for the popularity of this type of historical fiction.

Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)
Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was a French novelist and dramatist. A pioneer of the romantic theatre in France, he first achieved fame with his historical dramas, such as Henri III et sa cour (1829). His reputation now rests on his historical adventure novels, including The Three Musketeers (1844-45) and The Count of Monte Cristo
The Count of Monte Cristo
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the great literary adventures, indeed William Thackeray was so enthralled he began reading "at six one morning and never stopped till eleven at night." The hero is Edmond Dantés, a young sailor who, falsely accused of treason, is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of Château d'If. After staging a dramatic escape he sets out to discover the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies. A novel of enormous tension and excitement, Monte Cristo is also a tale of obsession and revenge, with Dantés, believing himself to be an "Angel of Providence", pursuing his vengeance to the bitter end before realizing that he himself is a victim of fate.

Alexandre Dumas famous French novelist of the 19th century
Dumas' adventure novels explore man's relationship with god and with each other. His life was as exciting as that of many of his characters - he had ties to the French resistance movement, had many mistresses and was forced out of France by his creditors as a result of his excessive spending.

One of the most famous French writers of the 19th century. Dumas is best known for the historical novels The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, both written within the space of two years, 1844-45, and which belong to the foundation works of popular culture. He was among the first, along with Honoré de Balzac and Eugène Sue, who fully used the possibilities of roman feuilleton, the serial novel. Dumas is credited with revitalizing the historical novel in France, although his abilities as a writer were under dispute from the beginning. Dumas' works are fast-paced adventure tales. Th... ALEXANDRE DUMAS (1802 - 1870)
Dumas was a major playwright who helped to revolutionize French drama and theater. He was one of the best historical novelists, publishing more than two hundred novels.
  • Nationality: French
  • Birth Date: July 24, 1802
  • Birth Place: Villers-Cotterêts, France
  • Death Date: December 5, 1870
  • Death Place: Puys, France
  • Occupation(s): playwright and novelist
    Early Life
Alexandre Dumas is usually designated père to distinguish him from his father and son of the same name. The son, known as fils, was also an important writer of drama and of fiction. Dumas’ father was an impoverished, disillusioned general in Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. His prowess and exploits were models for the character Porthos and for many incidents in Dumas’ works. Dumas was born in the village of Villers-Cotterêts on July 24, 1802, the grandson of a Haitian slave.
    Life’s Work
Though Dumas had published fiction earlier and drama later, the real shift to fiction came in 1842, with the publication of his first great historical novel, Le Chevalier d’Harmental (1842; English translation, 1856). The following years saw the publication of his most popular, though not regarded as his best, novels, Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844; The Three Musketeers, 1846), Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (1844-1845; The Count of Monte-Cristo, 1846), and La Tulipe Noire (1850; The Black Tulip, 1851).
