Lord Dunsany
B ritish peer, Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett was the 18th Baron Dunsany, whose family seat is in County Meath, northwest of Dublin. He fought in the Boer War and was wounded in WWI. An excellent chess player, Lord Dunsany was the Irish champion and held the great Capablanca to a draw in a simultaneous exhibition in London; his "Three Sailors' Gambit" is considered one of the best chess stories written. D unsany was one of the harbingers of modern fantasy, along with William Morris and George MacDonald. A successful playwright, he once had five concurrent plays running on Broadway ( Five Plays ). He wrote over seventy books, many with a quill pen, others dictated to his wife, beginning in 1905 with The Gods of Pegana , and including the very readable memoirs Patches of Sunlight and While the Sirens Slept . In the words of the ardent admirer H.P. Lovecraft: "To the truly imaginative he is a talisman and a key unlocking rich storehouses of dream." Such magical tales as "Idle Days on the Yann" and "A Shop in Go-by Street" conjure idyllic realms of fantasy far away from the worries of the common world though they may well have troubles of their own.

Dunsany, Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett 18th Baron (1878-1957) The ornate fantasy of Lord Dunsany (otherwise known as Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett; he was the eighteenth Baron Dunsany) was the product of a writing career of astonishing longevity, extending from the first decade of this century through 1948; he died in 1957. His literary works are highly poetic and imaginative. They began in 1905 with the mythological novel The Gods of Pegana. At Yeats's invitation he wrote many plays for the Abbey Theatre, including The Glittering Gate (1909) and The Laughter of the Gods (1919). His verse is contained in Fifty Poems (1930) and Mirage Water (1939). He also wrote an autobiographical series: Patches of Sunlight (1938), While the Sirens Slept (1944), The Sirens Wake (1945) and To Awaken Pegasus (1949). He achieved enormous popularity with his stories, novels, and plays (he was also an accomplished dramatist, perhaps the only major one in the literature of fantasy); this bejeweled style was of a piece with all the exotica of the East being discovered by the pre-World War I Intellectuals through the Ballets Russes and the ever-growing importing of art and ideas from India and the Moslem world. There are innumerable short stories, all the very essence of concise elegance. Typical are "The Hoard of the Gibbelins," in which it is told how the Gibbelins, who eat, "as is well known, nothing less good than man," protected their hoard of wealth from an epitomal Hero (and oh, what a devestating last sentence that story has!), and "The Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller, and the Doom Than Befell Him" (whose title alone should intrigue), the hero of which has an encounter with Hlo-hlo, the spider idol.

    CUALA PRESS
In 1902, Evelyn Gleeson founded the Dun Emer Industries specifically for the training and employment of young Irish women. The name of the enterprise translates as "Emer's Fort," Emer being the wife of the legendary hero Cuchulain. Deeply influenced by the Irish renaissance, the products were to be made of Irish materials as far as possible and reflect Irish themes. The products were hand-printed books, embroidery, tapestries, and carpets. The Yeats family was involved from the beginning, Lily with the textiles and Elizabeth with the press, and W. B. as the literary editor The following are the Dun Emer and Cuala Press holdings in the Rare Book Collection, which holds 68 out of the 77 numbered titles. Titles which are not held are in a black smaller point type. Additional miscellaneous publications are also held and are listed after the numbered entries. The numbers are from: Miller, Liam.
