John Crowley Little, Big Pbk published May 2000 by Millenium at £6.99 ISBN: 1-85798-711-X

Edgewood is many houses, all put inside each other, or across each other. It's filled with and surrounded by mystery and enchantment: the further in you go, the bigger it gets.
Smoky Barnable, who has fallen in love with Daily Alice Drinkwater, comes to Edgewood, her family home, where he finds himself drawn into a world of magical strangeness.
Crowley's work has a special alchemy - mixing the world we know with an imagined world which seems more true and real. Winner of the World Fantasy Award, Little, Big is eloquent, sensual, funny and unforgettable.
'A book that all by itself calls for a redefinition of fantasy' Ursula K. Le Guin
'Crowley is generous, obsessed, fascinating, gripping. Really, I think Crowley is so good that he has left everybody else in the dust' Peter Straub
'Ambitious, dazzling, strangely moving, a marvellous magic-realist family chronicle' Washington Post
'John Crowley writes sentences of such coruscating magnificence that the rest of the English language has fallen in love with them. I once knew an adverbial clause who was so infatuated with the linguistic beauty of Little, Big that the poor creature pined away into a comma.' James Morrow, author of The Eternal Footman

http://user.online.be/~claus/emntr.htm
Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett (1878 - 1957) arly in 1912, Ledwidge sent his principal notebook of poems to Lord Dunsany, by that time a leading author and playwriter who also influenced the young H.P. Lovecraft. Dunsany responded with an encouraging letter and invited the young poet. He became Ledwidge's mentor and showed how he could improve his poetry, teaching him all he knew about technique. Ledwidge was also givven the freedom of the castle's library, and spend several afternoons at Dunsany Castle. Dunsany wrote many letters in an effort to widen the market for his verse. In a letter he described how astonished he was "by the brillance of Ledwidge's eye that had looked at the fields of Meath and seen there all the simple birds and flowers, with a vividness that made those pages like a magnifying glass, through which one looked at familiar things seen thus for the first time." he illustrious man who introduced F.E.Ledwidge to the literary circle in Dublin and who became the poet's mentor, was Lord Dunsany, the 18th baron Dunsany. Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett was born on July 24, 1878 at Dunsany Castle, County Meath, Ireland. His uncle was Sir Horace Plunkett, the statesman who first proposed the Dominion structure for the creation of the Irish Free State. Lord Dunsany spent a great part of his youth at his mother's ancestral estate, Dunstall Priory, in Shoreham, Kent. He studied in the private schools Cheam School and Eton and finished his education at the military college at Sandhurst. Dunsany acceeded to his title of Baron in 1899 and married Lady Beatrice Villiers, youngest daughter of the 7th Earl of Jersey, in 1904. Their only son, Randal Plunkett was born in 1906.

Anne McCaffrey is a US writer (1926 - ) living in Ireland. Her first published sale is "Freedom of the Race", appearing in Hugo Gernsback's Science Fiction Plus in 1953; however, her first novel, "Restoree" didn't appear until 1967 ("I was raising children" - see our interview ). Anne McCaffrey is, of course, best known for her Pern "dragon" novels in which humans, symbiotically bonded with dragons, battle against the poisonous Threads and other dangers. She lives in a house of her own design, Dragonhold-Underhill (because she had to dig out a hill on her farm to build it) in Wicklow County, Ireland.

WALKER, S. MSS.
The Walker, S. mss., 1915-1922, consist of letters and writings of American dramatist Stuart Walker, 1888-1941. Most of the letters are written to Walker from Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany, 1878-1957, playwright. Other correspondents are Lady Beatrice (Child- Villiers) Dunsany, Benjamin F. Roeder, Booth Tarkington, Susanah (Keifer) Robinson Tarkington, and Stuart Walker. The letters from both Lord and Lady Dunsany relate their various activities, including Lord Dunsany's writings and his army service in the war. Those from the Tarkingtons all date from the last quarter of 1917 and most often involve Walker's staging of Booth Tarkington's Seventeen. The carbons or drafts of Stuart Walker's letters that are present are all addressed to either Lord or Lady Dunsany. A few of the letters exchanged between Walker and Lord Dunsany during 1916 have been published, in whole or in part, in Bierstadt, Edward Hale, Dunsany the dramatist. Boston, Little Brown, and Company, 1917, p. 133-168 (Main PR6007 .U7 Z5). Walker's writings present in the collection are "Six who pass while the lentils boil; a play in one act"; and "Three vignettes; three thumbnail sketches." The latter item consists of two short plays: "The medicine show" and "The very naked boy." A folder of miscellaneous poems and fragments completes the collection.

A Guide to Fantasy Authors and Tales compiled by George Jelliss A Part is in preparation concerning the earliest myths and legends from all parts of the world. The Classical Era is taken to range from the earliest works definitely assignable to a named author to the beginnings of speculative, predictive or cautionary science fiction. I have taken 1930 as marking the start of "The Modern Era" which will be dealt with in Part 2. This is a selection of the most interesting and influential works and authors, not an encyclopedia, but let us know of any serious omissions or misrepresentations. Against each author's name we give a list of their tales. The sequence is roughly chronological, authors appearing at the date when their most significant story was first published. The Outlanders, are interested in "science fiction, fantasy and horror" (and I would be inclined to add "adventure"), but where one draws the line between these, or round them, is very much a matter of opinion. Here, purely realistic science or adventure or horror stories without a fantasy element are excluded. The following scheme of background colours enables certain themes to be followed. This is only a rough guide: some writers cover more than one category and some stories are difficult to classify, for instance fairy tales can often be quite horrific. science fiction/speculation fairy tales/satire/humour heroic legend/romance exotic worlds/myth horror stories/tragedy ghost stories/gothic

Since then there have been fine bibliographies on the writings of Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, Jack Vance, L. Sprague de Camp and others. Such books are invaluable to the collector and researcher and also of interest to the curious or admiring general reader. Bridge Publications, set up by and devoted to the fiction of L. It is no less exhaustive than its predecessors in the field, and every fictional piece Hubbard ever wrote, published and unpublished, is listed, with many also described; it even covers Hubbard's work in his lesser known experiments in music, screen and stage writing, and poetry. In a generalized biographical chapter, Widder mentions but does not list or explore those particular non-fiction phases of his career, Dianetics and Scientology, which have made Hubbard famous, wealthy, and notorious.

Lord Dunsany

Lord Dunsany's best-known novel is The King of Elfland's Daughter (1924), wherein the men of Erl desire to be "ruled by a magic lord," and the lord's heir, Alveric, ventures into Elfland to win the king's daughter, Lirazel. Their story does not progress as a reader weaned on the diluted milk of formulaic fantasy would expect; and the novel's unique journeys and events are matched by Dunsany's rich and lyrical prose and by his contagious intoxication with the magic and marvels of both Elfland and our own world. Cynthia Ward Book Description
The poetic style and sweeping grandeur of The King of Elfland's Daughter has made it one of the most beloved fantasy novels of our time, a masterpiece that influenced some of the greatest contemporary fantasists. The heartbreaking story of a marriage between a mortal man and an elf princess is a masterful tapestry of the fairy tale following the "happily ever after."
From the Back Cover
"Inventor of a new mythology and weaver of surprising folklore, Lord Dunsany stands dedicated to a strange world of fantastic beauty . . . unexcelled in the sorcery of crystalline singing prose, and supreme in the creation of a gorgeous and languorous world of incandescently exotic vision. No amount of mere description can convey more than a fraction of Lord Dunsany's pervasive charm."
