Permanent Collection : Works of Art on Paper Medieval illuminated manuscripts, woodcuts by Albrecht Durer etchings by Piranesi drawings by Delacroix , and lithographs by Robert Rauschenberg are all to be found in the Carlos Museum's Works on Paper Collection. The 3,000 works of European and American art span six centuries and consist mainly of drawings, prints, and photographs, but also include some sculpture, paintings, and works in other media. The Art History Department of Emory University began the collection in 1967, and faculty members continue to play an active role in the acquisitions for the Museum. The Carlos Museum has also benefited from numerous donations from private collectors, many of them Emory alumni, as well as from Emory faculty and diverse friends based in Atlanta and elsewhere. These donations-encompassing 19th-century and modern photography, Renaissance and 17th -century reproductive prints, American Regionalist lithography, contemporary art and other areas-have enriched the Museum's collection immeasurably. Albrecht Durer by Kate Clautice Albrecht Durer was a famous artist and mathematician of the Renaissance. Albrecht Durer was born May 21, 1471 in Nuremburg, Germany. His father was a goldsmith and taught his son how to draw. At the age of 15 in 1486 Durer was apprenticed to a painter and printmaker named Michael Wolgemut. In this shop Durer produced numerous wood cuts for illustrations for the Nurember Chronicle. Durer married Agnes Frey In Nuremberg in 1494. Soon after he married Agnes he left for Italy. Once in Italy he made many detailed water color paintings. Sometime between 1505 and 1507 Durer traveled again to Italy. There he met many great artists and made many beautiful works of art. Durer's final journey was to Aachen to meet with Charles V to sell his work. Durer travelled on the money he earned selling his paintings along the way. This journey was successful. He retured to Nuremberg where he died April 6, 1528. Durer also was a famous for his math as well as art. Albrecht did alot for prespective even more than Leonardo Da Vinci. Durer also was the first to try to find the mathmatical principles of the face and human figure. Pretty cool! And Here are my references!

Director's Choice: A selection for our 100th Collectors' List Old Masters In the 1970s I was working in London for Morris Ayres who was a book and print dealer, and seller of Greek and Roman antiquities. Amongst many other things, he was an expert of Rembrandt's prints and collected copies because he enjoyed comparing them to the original work. Because he knew so much about the copies it made it easier to identify the originals. Being able to actually handle original prints from the old masters was an exciting discovery for me. And ever since that time I have always had etchings and engravings from the great periods of printmaking. After all these years I am still fascinated by them and will continue to collect. Durer's Polyhedra Albrecht Durer, the remarkable German renaissance printmaker (1471-1528), made an important contribution to the polyhedral literature in his 1525 book, Underweysung der Messung, available in English translation as Painter's Manual . It was one of the first books to teach the methods of perspective, and was highly regarded throughout the sixteenth century. Durer travelled to Italy to learn perspective and wanted to publish the methods so they were not kept secret among a few artists. Who he learned from is not known, but Luca Pacioli is a likely possibility. Some of the techniques and illustrations follow very closely the work of Piero della Francesca Durer's Underweysung der Messung contains a very interesting discussion of perspective and other techniques and it typifies the renaissance idea that polyhedra are models worthy of an artist 's attention. More importantly, this book presents the earliest known examples of polyhedral nets , i.e., polyheda unfolded to lie flat for printing. The image at right is Durer's drawing of the net of an icosahedron . While the net is correct, his techniques of perspective were still under development, and it is interesting to observe that the projection at the upper right has a number of inaccuracies.
