German artists had little difficulty in adapting their own Gothic tradition to that of the Flemish artists Robert Campin, Jan van Eyck, and especially Rogier van der Weyden. The northern empirical approach to the world (based on observation rather than theory) was their common bond. Durer is probably most renowned to the broad public for his very accurate paintings of animals. Unfortunately not so many of these charming art works have been issued on stamps, but here are a few of them to give you a taste. His water colours are second to none, and he should be considered a serious "competitor" to the American ornithologist and aquarellist J.J. Audubon. Here are shown only a few examples of his drawings and paintings from the world of animals.

Durer is also famed for his religious paintings, and one of the most famous ones is "The Feast of the Rose Garlands". The painting belongs to the National Gallery of Prague (Czechoslovakia), which is obvious from the logo on the selvedge; "NG" means Narodni Galeria, or National Gallery.

Dürer, Albrecht
Timeline: Northern Renaissance I hold that the perfection of form and beauty is contained in the sum of all men.
Dürer, Four Books on Human Proportions Dürer, Albrecht (b. May 21, 1471, Imperial Free City of Nürnberg [Germany]d. April 6, 1528, Nürnberg), German painter, printmaker, draughtsman and art theorist, generally regarded as the greatest German Renaissance artist. His vast body of work includes altarpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings. His woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), retain a more Gothic flavour than the rest of his work. Born in Nürnberg as the third son of the Hungarian goldsmith Albrecht Dürer. Began as an apprentice to his father in 1485, but his earliest known work, one of his many self portraits, was made in 1484. Died in Nürnberg in 1528. During 1513 and 1514 Dürer created the greatest of his copperplate engravings: the Knight St. Jerome in His Study , and Melencolia I all of approximately the same size, about 24.5 by 19.1 cm (9.5 by 7.5 inches). The extensive, complex, and often contradictory literature concerning these three engravings deals largely with their enigmatic, allusive, iconographic details. Although repeatedly contested, it probably must be accepted that the engravings were intended to be interpreted together. There is general agreement, however, that Dürer, in these three master engravings, wished to raise his artistic intensity to the highest level, which he succeeded in doing. Finished form and richness of conception and mood merge into a whole of classical perfection.

DURER, ALBRECHT Hercules and the Stymphalian Birds
Durer was born in Nuremberg Germany in 1471. His father, a goldsmith, would be the first art teacher to his son. After studying with his father, Durer would next study with a local master learning the trade of engraving woodcuts for various illustrations. At that time
Nuremberg and southern Germany was a center for publishing. Woodcuts and engravings were used in creating illustrations for the documents published there. 16th century German art was in part influenced by the Gothic style of the Middle Ages and by the current religious movement: the Reformation and the teachings of Martin Luther. During his lifetime Durer, like the later Rembrandt, would paint a number of self portraits. This, also like Rembrandt, showed his lifelong curiosity with self exploration and with his role as an artist.

View Art Work Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was the son of a Hungarian goldsmith. He was born in Neuremburg, Germany on May 21, 1471. In 1494, after completing his apprenticeship with Michael Wolgemut four years early, his family arranged for him to marry Agnes Trey. It was also during this year that he visited Venice and became influenced by their style. Dürer worked on woodcuts, drawings, paintings and wood and copper engravings. He was most concerned with making his subjects down to earth and meaningful to everyday people. In 1507, Dürer went back to Venice and stayed there for a year and a half. When he came back, he primarily focused himself on his engravings. He learned about proportion and perspective and published his thoughts on these two subjects. On April 6, 1528, Dürer died in Nuremburg. Some are of another opinion and discuss how men ought to be. I will not argue with them about that; but I hold nature for master in such matters and the fancy of man for delusion. The Creator fashioned men once and for all as they must be, and I hold that the perfection of form and beauty is contained in the sum of all men.

Albrecht Durer Durer Albrecht (1471-1528) a German painter, engraver, and designer, was one of the foremost artists of his country during the Renaissance. Italian painters He was perhaps the most original creative German artist, and he influenced generations of artists in northern Europe. He learned much from the Italian painters, and combined their discoveries with the tradition of his German homeland. Christian spirit Durer combined a love of the ancient world with a deep Christian spirit. His works include the engraving, Knight, Death, and the Devil; a woodcut series, The Smaller Passion; and the self-portrait in the Prado in Madrid. Two of his most notable paintings are Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand and Adoration of the Magi. As an engraver, Durer developed the methods of Martin Schongauer, and combined them with the lessons of Andrea Mantegna to bring that art to its highest perfection in his century. He probably drew the designs for his woodcuts in the blocks, then carved away the wood to create wood engravings. They were widely copied. His woodcuts are inventive, exuberant, sometimes grim and grotesque. Home Nuremberg Durer was born in Nuremberg, where he probably learned how to engrave from his father , a goldsmith. For three years, he was apprenticed to Michel Wohlgemuth (1434-1519). At 19, he may have visited Italy.

Faith and Humanism: Engravings and Woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer
    January 18 - March 9
Fortune , 1495, engraving Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) is widely considered to be the outstanding German artist of the Renaissance period, perhaps even of all time. He not only executed paintings and drawings of the highest quality, but also made major contributions to the development of printmaking. In fact, Dürer’s prolific output of masterful woodcuts and engravings, which were admired and collected all over Europe, played an enormously important role in spreading the stylistic innovations that were being introduced by Italian Renaissance masters like Andrea Mantegna and Michelangelo. Dürer’s art was forged during a time of momentous change in Western Europe. Humanism — the interest in the classical civilizations of Greek and Rome that fueled the Italian Renaissance — was flowing north and shaped the cultural life in Nuremberg, the busy commercial center in southern Germany where Dürer lived and worked. At the same time, the grip of the Catholic Church on the lives and minds of the populace was weakening, and the Protestant Reformation, which occurred near the end of Dürer’s life, was the culmination of a century of change that signaled the end of the Middle Ages.

    http://www.alchemylab.com/melancholia.htm
Interpretation of this Drawing (by John Read) Early in the sixteenth century, the famous German artists and engravers, Albrecht Durer and Lucas Cranach, were influenced to some extent by alchemical ideas and symbolism, but they left no pictorial impression of an alchemist or his laboratory. Durer (1471-1528), one of the two greatest artists Germany has ever produced, was particularly skilled in drawing on the block for the wood-cutter and in engraving on copper with his own unsurpassed hand. In 1513 and 1514 he wrought three engravings on copper that will rank for all time among the world's select masterpieces of this form of art. These were "The Knight " (1513), "St. Jerome in his Study" (1514), and "Melencolia" (1514). There is no evidence that Durer had an acquaintance with alchemy so intimate as, say, that of Chaucer in an earlier age; nevertheless, alchemy formed an essential ingredient of the cultural background of his times. To contemporary men of culture in general, as to the alchemist in particular, the "Melencolia" must have appeared as a rich repository of the pictorial symbolism of alchemy. The Roman numeral "I" following the engraved title suggests at once that Durer had it in mind to design and execute a series of four copper-engravings illustrating the Four Temperaments: melancholic, phlegmatic, choleric, and sanguine. These were linked in the medieval mind with the Four Elements of the alchemists and certain other mystical groups of four, a magical number inherited from the early civilizations that flourished long before the time of Pythagoras.

    Biography
Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) was the son of a goldsmith who settled in Nuremberg in 1455, and in 1467 married his master's daughter. The young Albrecht was first apprenticed to his father, and was then bound for three years to the painter Michael Wolgemut, whose large workshop also produced woodcut book illustrations for the printer Anton Koberger, Dürer's godfather. He traveled for four years, from Easter 1490, visiting Colmar, Basle, and Strasbourg, and in May 1494, he returned to Nuremberg and married. In the autumn of 1494, he went to Venice. During this visit, he met Giovanni Bellini, whom he greatly admired, and painted several works for the German merchants of Venice, which shows some knowledge of Leonardo. On his return, he intensified the learned side of his art and personality; he studied mathematics, geometry, Latin, and humanist literature, and sought the company of scholars rather than that of his fellow artisans. This departure in mode of life and thought was directly traceable to the influence of Leonardo and Mantegna and the example of Bellini, and though it was common enough in Italy, it was unprecedented in Germany. In 1512, he became court painter to the Emporer Maximillian, and in July 1520, he journeyed to the Netherlands to obtain from his successor, Charles V, the ratification of his post and pension. He saw the coronation of the new Emperor at Aachen and was confirmed in his office, visited Antwerp, Brussels, Malines, Cologne, Middleburg, Brugues and Ghent, and was honored and feted all along the route. He returned home in July 1521, and despite ill-health resulting from fever, probably contracted in the swamps of Zeeland, where he had ventured in the hope of seeing a dead whale, he worked unremittingly until his death.
