She articulated those ideas in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , first published in 1875. Four years later she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, which today has branch churches and societies around the world. In 1908 she launched The Christian Science Monitor , a leading international newspaper, the recipient, to date, of seven Pulitzer Prizes. Born on a farm in Bow, New Hampshire, she was the youngest of Mark and Abigail Baker's six children. Her formal education was interrupted by periods of sickness, but when not in school she read and studied extensively at home, writing prose and poetry from an early age. Her parents sought help from physicians for her ailments, but the treatments brought only temporary relief. Raised in a deeply religious Congregational home, she rebelled against the Calvinist doctrine of predestination at an early age, and regularly turned to the Bible and prayer for hope and inspiration. In December 1843, Mary Baker married a promising young building contractor, George Washington Glover, moving with him to the Carolinas. He died the following June, three months before the birth of their son, George. She found shelter and support for herself and the boy back in her parents' New Hampshire home until her mother's death in late 1849. In 1850, still suffering from recurring bouts of illness and no longer having her mother's help, she found she had no choice but to place George in the care of the family's former nurse and her husband.

She later attended Holmes Academy at Plymouth and Sanbornton Academy. At a young age she published poetry and prose in periodicals. Widowed six months after her marriage to George W. Glover and responsible for their child (also named George W. Glover), she spent nine years among relatives, teaching at times and often in ill health. Married in 1853 to Daniel Patterson, a dentist, she lived in the country for some time, and later moved to Lynn, Mass. Having heard of the success in mental healing of Phineas Parkhurst Quimby , she went in 1862 to Portland, Maine. She received benefit from his treatment and became his pupil, but began to harbor doubts about Quimby's concept of mind as spiritual matter and his hostility to religion. In 1866 she separated from her husband; she later (1873) obtained a divorce. The year 1866 marks the actual beginning of Christian Science as she apprehended it. In the ensuing years, she refined the doctrine and plans for her new church. The exhibit, titled “‘This is woman’s hour ’ The Life of Mary Baker Eddy,” will be available for public viewing on the second-floor balcony of Branson Library Oct. 1-12. Created by The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy organization of Boston, the exhibit is a smaller version of a large multi-media exhibit that was first shown at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y. The large exhibit, being shown in September and October at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, has been traveling throughout the United States since 1998. Mary Baker Eddy lived 1821-1910. She was part of the women’s reform movement challenging mainstream thinking in regards to health-care and religion, and proved through her life that a woman could be a thinker and an entrepreneur. She is best known for founding The Christian Science Monitor and as the author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. The exhibit portrays Eddy as a healer, thinker and reformer.
