Christian Science

Mary Baker Eddy
Mary Baker was born in Bow, New Hampshire in 1821. She was very sick as a child and was unable to attend school, so she was educated at home by her older brother. At a young age, she began publishing her own poetry in periodicals.
As an adult, she remained ill until meeting Dr. Phineas Quimby, who introduced her to mental healing. Mary believed that the cause and cure of all diseases are mental, which led to the founding of the Christian Science Publishing Company. She then published her beliefs in a book entitled Science and Health She also founded and became the editor of the Journal of Christian Science In 1879, the First Church of Christ, Scientist was formally chartered and Mary served as the head. She taught hundreds of students, mostly female, to spread the word about Christian Science and to recruit new members.
Mary Baker Eddy was the only American woman to found a lasting American-based religion. She has won 6 Pulitzer Prizes for her publications and her Science and Health was voted “one of the 75 books by women whose words have changed the world” by the National Women’s Book Association.

Mary Baker Eddy and Spirituality and Health

Mary Baker Eddy
(1821-1910) was an influential American author, teacher, and religious leader, who is noted for her innovative ideas about spirituality and health, which she named Christian Science. She articulated those ideas in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , first published in 1875. Today, the interest in the mind/body connection is accelerating with evidence from over 1,000 (since 1990) published research studies on the link between an individual's spiritual life and health.
The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity opened in Fall of 2002 with the mission of providing a place to explore the power of ideas throughout history to inspire individuals and shape the world, and includes an exhibit that presents the story of Mrs. Eddy's quest, discoveries, and achievements.
Plan to spend time in the Library's one-of-a-kind Mapparium, a three-story, stained-glass globe featuring a multi-media presentation every 15 minutes; reflective Hall of Ideas with animated bronze-and-glass fountain; behind-the-scenes Monitor Gallery; and interactive Quest Gallery.

By Valerie Minard
Mary Baker Eddy, born in rural New England in the 1800's, overcame many hurdles to become an acclaimed author, publisher, and religious leader whose impact is still being felt today. In 1995, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame for "making an indelible mark on society, religion, and journalism." How did this independent New England woman rise from obscurity to become, as Human Life magazine described in 1907, "the most famous, interesting and powerful woman in America, if not the world, today"? Eddy (1821-1910) was born and raised on a farm near Concord, New Hampshire, in the United States. Because of many bouts of illness, she received most of her education at home, sometimes with the help her brother, Albert, a student at Dartmouth College. This turned out to be an advantage, given the many restrictions on women's education in 19th century America.

Back to American Women introduction Mary Baker Eddy While lying in bed severely disabled from a fall in 1866, Mary Baker Eddy read the biblical account of Christ's healing of a man's paralysis. Suddenly her own malady eased, and she was overcome with a belief in faith's healing powers. As she later put it, she "had touched the hem of Christian Science." In the years following, she gradually evolved a religious system that held that the human spirit, properly guided by Christian principles, could overcome physical suffering. In 1875, she presented her convictions to the world in Science and Health , and four years later she formally established the Church of Christ, Scientist. The church had few followers at first, but by the early 1900s, adherents to Christian Science numbered into the many thousands and were spread throughout the world. While Eddy was posing for this portrait over a three-week period in 1889, she worked on a revised version of Science and Health . The bust's maker, Luella Varney, had been trained in Italy and included among her sitters Mark Twain and Julia Ward Howe

LaDonna Harris, political activist and Founder of Americans for Indian Opportunity. Shirley Jackson, physicist and first female African-American Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Maya Lin, architect and designer of The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington, D.C. Ellen Ochoa, engineer, inventor and first Hispanic female astronaut. Esther Peterson, consumer advocate instrumental in food content labeling and equal pay for women. And Lillian Smith, author and civil rights advocate honored in 1956 by the women who organized the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott. These women are recognized as "Women of Courage and Vision," the theme of this year's celebration. Each one has blessed countless others. The National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York, celebrates women year round and recognizes them for achievements of enduring value. Remarkably, few women have been inducted for contributions to religion. For generations the churches have been filled and fed by women, yet their achievements rarely recognized. In 1995, Mary Baker Eddy was inducted for making "an indelible mark on society, religion and journalism." Her groundbreaking efforts in founding this newspaper, preaching, publishing, and introducing the equality of women in church hierarchy resonate even today.
