The North Carolina Department of Transportation Presents
Later Settlers at the Site (1720-1740s)
In 1719, North Carolina governor Charles Eden purchased the Eden House property Period II
Artist's Reconstruction from the sons of former owner Henry King. By this time, people had lived at this location for over forty years. At least several of the original buildings were still standing. Eden constructed a fine plantation house north of the original site and renovated at least two of the buildings that were later excavated by Coastal Carolina Research By the time Charles Eden arrived on the property, many of the conditions that had made life hazardous for earlier inhabitants in the Albemarle Sound region had vanished. Settlement was underway in the nearby town of Edenton, and the pirate Edward Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard, had been captured and killed. Piracy continued to be a problem for several more years, but starting around 1720 settlers began to expand their farms. The 1715 peace treaty with the Tuscarora Indians effectively removed the threat of Native American hostility. In this period of newfound peace and expansion Eden used the plantation as a seat of government. Eden's ownership of the property was not destined to be long-lived, however. He died there on March 16, 1722, from yellow fever, only four years after purchasing the property.

This was later transferred to N-T (Oldham) Ltd, Eden Works, Honeywell Lane, Oldham Lancs, (at Oldham in April 1975). But it never produced in any quantity, mainly due to lack of expertise. It was closed in December 1976, when the lock making division was transferred back to Birmingham. But production never re-commenced. Newman Tonks then set up Fleet Lock (qv) as a subsidiary of their Cartwright door closer division, in Straight Road, Short Heath. In the 1930s to the 1960s were probably the second biggest distributor of locks and keys etc. after Willen Key Co Ltd. From the 1970s went into decline and eventually closed in July 2000. edited by Michael Ackland
Cover illustration: Detail from Mount Wellington with the Orphan Asylum - Van Dieman's Land , John Glover 1837 Dustjacket synopsis:
"Charles Harpur was one of the first and most important of Australia's native-born poets. From the time he bagan writing in the 1820s till his death in 1868, he was concerned with celebrating the beauty of the Australian landscape, and attempting to improve the intellectual life of his fellows. "Harpur was a vigorous advocate of republican ideas; and, just as rigorously, opposed transportation, the arrogation of power by a landed elite, and privilege of all kinds. His writings also provide important insights into contemporary attitudes towards national identity, faith, Aborigines, women, education and love. This book brings together Charles Harpur's best-known poetry and prose - including a number of works out of print since the poet's lifetime." First Paragraph from the Introduction: Charles Harpur is now acknowledged to be our most important colonial poet, but it was not always so. In his own lifetime, Harpur attracted both sincere praise and downright abuse. Among his friends he could number the future Colonial Secretary and Premier, Henry Parkes, the literary Maecenas of Sydney, Nicol Stenhouse, and the gifted native youth, Daniel Deniehy; all of whom hailed him as a writer of genius. Their encouragement, however, was more than counterbalanced by contemporary derision and incomprehension. The first survey of Australian writing, G. B. Barton's
