Maria Edgeworth [1767 - 1849]
Maria Edgeworth was born in Oxfordshire, at the home of her grandparents, but spent most of her life in Ireland on her father's estate. Her early efforts at fiction were melodramatic, one of her schoolgirl novels featuring a villian who wore a mask made from the skin of a dead man's face. She grew up in the landed gentry of Ireland, with the families of Kitty Pakenham (later Wellington's wife), Lady Moira, and her aunt Margaret Ruston at Black Castle for company. She acted as manager of her father's estate, later drawing on this experience for her novels about the Irish. In 1802 the Edgeworths went abroad, first to Brussels and then to France (during the Peace of Amiens, that brief lull in the Napoleanic wars). They met all the notables, and Maria recieved a marriage proposal from a Swedish count. They returned to Ireland and Maria returned to writing. After her father's death in 1817 she edited his memoirs, and extended them with her biographical comments. She was an active writer to the last, and worked strenously for the relief of the famine-stricken Irish peasants during 1845. Mr. Edgeworth, a well-know author and inventor, encouraged his daughter's career, and has been criticized for his insistence on approving and editing her work. The tales in

Write Page Author List
This lists all the authors whose works or biographies are listed on this site. I am updating the site with new authors every week or so, depending on the demands of my day jobs. Authors of historic interest to genre writers are selected because they are either too famous to ignore, like Austen, or not mentioned on the Web, like Edgeworth and Radcliffe. The site called A Celebration of Women Writers lists many female authors, some with a biography, some with links to on-line copies of their work. The Write Page has several biographies of the lesser known authors available here. It's an interesting collection, from the Restoration bawdiness of Mrs. Manley to the vehemently pro-abolitionist Lydia Child and the formidably intellectual Elizabeth Carter. There are several pages linked from there, with dozens of writers.

MARIA EDGEWORTH

(1767 - 1849) novelist
Born 1 st Jan 1767, Black Bourton, Oxfordshire, England Second child of Richard Lovell Edgeworth; educated in England. The family went back to Edgeworthstown, County Longford, in 1782, where Maria became her father's chief assistant in running the property and educating his numerous other children. Her first publication, Letters to Literary Ladies (1795), was much influenced by her father's ideas on women's education. The Parent's Assistant was published in 1796. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent (1800), was an immediate success. Scott said in the original edition of Waverley that his aim was 'in some distant degree to emulate the admirable Irish portraits drawn by Miss Edgeworth.' Another novel, Belinda , followed in 1801. Essays on Irish Bulls (1802) was written by herself and her father. Visited Brussels and Paris 1802. Received a proposal of marriage from a Swedish count, Edelcrantz; refused from a sense of duty to her family. Back at Edgeworthstown in 1803 she wrote sitting at a table in the family sitting-room, undisturbed by surrounding talk and activity. Her father encouraged her, provided plots, and sometimes inserted long passages of his own composition.
