Slot? What does
that mean?
A ttention, online news sites: It's protester , with an e Demonstrator has an o . I don't make the rules; I just enforce them.
W hat's wrong with the following statements?
  • The Mexican state of Jalisco is 15 times larger than neighboring Colima.
  • Covad's entry-level broadband service is four times faster than most modem connections.
  • A killer who commits his crime in Baltimore County is 26 times more likely to receive the death penalty than one in neighboring Baltimore City. The problem is that "times [blank]er" and "times more," while very common (the above examples are from my newspaper, The Washington Post), make no sense. Although we may understand the intended meaning, such phrasing confuses addition with multiplication and, at least when taken literally, contains a built-in distortion. The bottom line:
  • "Times" goes with "as [blank] as."
  • Percentages go with "[blank]er" and "more [blank]." >>CONTINUED>> Do you have a question for The Slot?

    Significant Points
    • Competition is expected to be less for lower paying, entry-level jobs at small daily and weekly newspapers, trade publications, and radio and television broadcasting stations in small markets. Persons who fail to gain better paying jobs or earn enough as independent writers usually are able to transfer readily to communications-related jobs in other occupations.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Writers and editors communicate through the written word. Writers and editors generally fall into one of three categories. Writers and authors develop original fiction and nonfiction for books, magazines and trade journals, newspapers, online publications, company newsletters, radio and television broadcasts, motion pictures, and advertisements. Technical writers develop scientific or technical materials, such as scientific and medical reports, equipment manuals, appendices, or operating and maintenance instructions. They also may assist in layout work.
