RECORD OF INSANE - MARSHALL COUNTY
Editors note: In looking for material to print in this publication, a concentrated effort is made to find obscure information not easily found by the person searching for roots in Marshall County. That is the purpose for printing the following item, not to offend.
In the late 1800's, mental facilities were having the same problems we face today in that space for people needing treatment was not always available. Just inside the front cover of a large book recording admissions from Marshall County are two letters from the Indiana Hospital for the Insane. The book can be found in the Marshall County Historical Museum and the letters read:
Indianapolis, Ind. Jany 7th 1880
Clerk of Marshall Co.
Sir:
According to request I will state that the quota of your county is 12. Number in hospital is 81 woman and 3 men can be received pursuant act 1852 Jany 15 Decb'r 10-29 inclusive.
Very respy Jos. G. Rogers

John Thompson's advice should be our keynote in advising. The country is full of men of no party ties. Garfield is the ideal self-made man. Nobody since Dr. Franklin so completely the work of his own ambitious labor. Clay and Lincoln got their place by gifts direct from Heaven. But the full man, the trained man, the man equipped for achievement, in short, the man like Garfield, is made by his own perseverance and industry. What an encouragement to the ambitious young fellows of our country! It will surely tell in the canvass. If before the day of the Presi- dential election we can persuade the country that Garfield is surely coming in, we may carry several Southern States. What a victory that would be! But - Sincerely, R. B. HAYES.
