Eliot, George, eigentlich Mary Ann (Marian) Evans, (1819-1880) Englische Schriftstellerin.

Victorian writer whose insightful psychological novels paved way to modern character portrayals - contemporary of Dostoevsky (1821-1881), who at the same time in Russia developed similar narrative techniques. Eliot's liaison with the married writer and editor George Henry Lewes arise among the rigid Victorians much indignation, which calmed down with the progress of her literary fame. "Marriage, which has been the bourne of so many narratives, is still a great beginning, as it was to Adam and Eve, who kept their honeymoon in Eden, but had their first little one among the thorns and thistles of the wilderness. It is still the beginning of the home epic - the gradual conquest or irremediable loss of that complete union which makes the advancing years as a climax, and age the harvest of sweet memories in common." Count That Day Lost
George Eliot (1819-1880)
If you sit down at set of sun
And count the acts that you have done,
And, counting, find
One self-denying deed, one word
That eased the heart of him who heard,
One glance most kind
That fell like sunshine where it went
Then you may count that day well spent.
But if, through all the livelong day
You've cheered no heart, by yea or nay
If, through it all You've done nothing that you can trace That brought the sunshine to one face No act most small That helped some soul and nothing cost Then count that day as worse than lost. Awards Contact Games Home ... Webrings

George Eliot
George Eliot, probably the most learned of Victorian novelists, studied French, German, Italian, Spanish, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew both at school and later. But her novels, almost without exception, concerned English life (1863's Romola is the only one set entirely outside of England).
Born Marian Evans in Warwickshire, her early life, though marked by a private education with tutors, was otherwise a typically provincial one. She lived with her brother and her carpenter-turned-land agent father. After her father's death in 1849, she traveled in Europe and settled in London, where she became associated with the Westminster Review. By the mid-1840s and into the 1850s, Eliot (still as Evans) worked extensively as a translator of contemporary philosophy, most notably of Feuerbach and Spinoza. Her life in London as an editor, reviewer, and translator brought her into contact with a rarefied intellectual community, including the empiricist Herbert Spencer, the feminist Barbara Bodichon, and the writer G.H. Lewes, with whom she lived from 1854 to 1878. (They never married at least in part because Lewes's wife would not grant him a divorce.)
She assumed the pseudonym "George Eliot" with the 1857 publication of Scenes of Clerical Life.

G eorge Eliot (Mary Anne Evans: 1819-1880)
Mary Anne Evans was born at Arbury Farm, Chilvers Coton, Nuneaton. She was the daughter - by his second marriage - of Robert Evans, a builder and land agent. Evans was a man possessed of ambition, perseverance and great strength of both character and body. He is generally acknowledged to be the model of Caleb Garth in Middlemarch and of Adam Bede. As a girl, Mary Anne was a somewhat reserved and sensitive child with a remarkably developed intellect. It was she who took control of the running of her father’s house after the death of her mother in 1836. Her first published work – a religious poem signed "M.A.E." – appeared in The Christian Observer of January 1840.

Eliot, George
Pseudonym for Mary Ann Cross, also Marian Evans, original surname Evans
Victorian novelist who developed the method of psychological depiction characteristic of modern fiction - contemporary of Dostoyevsky (1821-1881), who at the same time in Russia developed his intuitive understanding of human heart. Eliot's liaison with the married writer and editor George Henry Lewes made her an outcast until her literary fame overcame the moralistic irritation.
"Marriage, which has been the bourne of so many narratives, is still a great beginning, as it was to Adam and Eve, who kept their honeymoon in Eden, but had their first little one among the thorns and thistles of the wilderness. It is still the beginning of the home epic - the gradual conquest or irremediable loss of that complete union which makes the advancing years as a climax, and age the harvest of sweet memories in common." (from Middlemarch, 1871-72)
In Coventry she met Charles Bray and later Charles Hennell, who introduced her to many new religious and political ideas. Under Eliot's control the Westminster Review enjoyed success. She became the centre of a literary circle, one of whose members was George Henry Lewes, who would be her companion until his death in 1878. Lewes's wife was memtally unbalanced and she had already had two children by another man. In 1854 Eliot went to Germany with Lewes. Their unconventional union caused some difficulties because Lewes was still married and he was unable to obtain divorce. Eliot did not inform her close friends Caroline and Sarah Hennell about her decision to live with Lewes - the both friends were shocked and angry because she had not trusted them.

george eliot Novelist George Eliot wan the pen name of May Ann Evans. Her father was a Warwickshire land agent. In 1850 George Eliot moved to London and began to write for the Westminster review. It was then that she translated Feurbach’s Essence of Christianity, the only book that bore her real name. In 1854, Eliot began to live with George Henry Lewes. Lewes was already a literary success before fame came to George, but as her reputation grew with such novels as The Mill of Floss, Silas Marner, Middlemarch (Considered to be one of her greatest works), so did her income until it way outstripped his. When Lewes died in 1878, Eliot turned to John Walter Cross who had been a friend to them both and married him two years later. They moved to 4 Cheyne Walk, SW3 , but sadly their married life only lasted a few months as Eliot died on 22 nd December 1880. There is a plaque on the floor of ‘Poets Corner’ in Westminster Abbey to her memory
