(Mary Ann Evans)
English Author
George Eliot, as she later became known, was living in 1852 at the house of John Chapman, with whom she edited the Westminster Review. A meeting was held there, in opposition to the Booksellers' Association's price-fixing policy. In a letter dated 5 May 1852, she writes: "The meeting last night went off triumphantly...Dickens in the chair a position he fills remarkably well, preserving a courteous neutrality of eyebrow, and speaking with clearness and decision. His appearance is certainly disappointing no benevolence in the face and I think little in the head the anterior lobe not by any means remarkable. In fact he is not distinguished looking in any way neither handsome nor ugly, neither fat nor thin, neither tall nor short." The phraseology of George Eliot's letter reflects her belief, at that time, in phrenology. The "anterior lobe" governed the intellectual faculties such as Casuality and Comparison. George Eliot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. George Eliot was the pen name of English female novelist Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880). Born on a farm in Warwickshire, she used many of her real-life experiences in her books, which she wrote under a man's name in order to improve her chances of publication. She defied convention by living for many years with George Henry Lewes , a writer, who died in 1878. After this she married a man twenty years younger than her, but herself died a few months later. Her works include: She also wrote a considerable amount of fine poetry. (Collected Poems - ISBN 1871438403 References and external links: http://65.107.211.206/eliot/eliotov.html

January 2 ~  Strongest Principle What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew "The strongest p r i n c i p l e of growth lies in human c h o i c e ~ George Eliot Celebrated Victorian novelist George Eliot (1819-1880) was born Mary Ann Evans in Warwickshire, England and attended private schools where she studied German, Italian, and music and developed strong religious convictions. "A woman's heart must be of such a size and no larger, else it must be pressed small, like Chinese feet; her happiness is to be made as cakes are, by a fixed receipt," Eliot observed. Her fiction celebrated the use of psychological analysis, the basis for modern character portrayals. "Our deeds determine us," she said, "as much as we determine our deeds." With books that celebrated her middle-class upbringing, Eliot wrote about realism and morality in small, rural towns. Her first novel, Adam Bede (1859) was a tragic love story about her father. "Delicious autumn !" she wrote. "My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns." In Silas Marner (1861), she created an unhappy miser who loses his

George Eliot, 1819-1880
Although she is remembered mainly for her novels, George Eliot also published two volumes of poetry in the course of her illustrious literary career. The Spanish Gypsy explores the conflicts that arise in a woman's life when she must choose between great duty and the prospect of a happy marriage. The book was widely reviewed and received mixed, though mostly laudatory, critical assessment. The reviewer for the Spectator found it "much the greatest poem on any wide scope...which has ever proceeded from a woman." After the Spanish Gypsy , Eliot never again attempted a book-length poem, but she did continue to write shorter narrative poems and some lyrics. This rare presentation copy of The Spanish Gypsy was inscribed by Eliot to Emmanuel Deutsch, a Talmudic scholar who instructed her in Hebrew and influenced some of the ideas which later developed into her novel Daniel Deronda

    Silas Marner
by George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) (1819 - 1880)
    Type of Work:

    Symbolic, life drama Setting
English village of Raveloe; early nineteenth century Principal Characters
Silas Marner, a lonely and miserly linen-weaver
Godfrey Cass, an insensitive, yet charming, young man
    Dunstan Cass, Godfrey's opportunistic brother
Squire Cass, Godfrey and Dunstan's lewd, dull-witted father Eppie, an abandoned little girl Story Overveiw Silas Marner, bent at his loom, was interrupted by some curious boys peering through his cabin window. Scaring them away with an icy stare, the shriveled linen-weaver returned to his work. Fifteen years earlier Marner had come to Raveloe from a northern industrial town, where he had been a respected elder in a small fundamentalist sect. But one night as he watched over a deacon lying on his death-bed, Silas fell into a trance. While he slept, his best friend had stolen into the room and taken the deacon's money bag; then, in a move to win the affections of Silas' sweetheart, he had blamed the theft on Silas. The weaver was "convicted" in the case by the drawing of lots; and even God found him guilty. His faith shattered and "his trust in man ... cruelly bruised," Silas had left his beloved home in Lantern Yard. The eccentric visionary now found himself a ]one alien in the prosperous village of Raveloe. Taking refuge in his work, Silas slowly began to accumulate gold. It became his one purpose in life, and every evening the near-sighted old man would count and caress his shiny coins.
