DOUGLAS/ [pict. ornament] / TORONTO/THE MUSSON BOOK CO., LIMITED/1906/ Half-title. Amanda M. Douglas was an American writer chiefly noted for her 'Kathie' series and for her 'Little girl' series published in 10 volumes from 1897 to 1909. (Allibone Supp). A little girl in old Quebec is her only book with a Canadian setting. It is a highly romantic tale of Quebec City in the days of Champlain. The history is combined with the unusual story of a fey child who finally succumbs to love and marriage. There are interesting comments on the lot of women (both native and non-native), and religion. 470 DUNCAN, Norman, 1871-1916. The Stanley Lieberman Memorial Collection of American Juvenile Literature A Checklist Compiled by Bruce Jay Wasser (Princeton University Library. Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. 1969) How to use this checklist Each title in the Lieberman Collection is represented by a separate entry in the following checklist, and, sometimes, by cross (or X) references as well. The following sample entry
Author Title Call number Adams, William Taylor 1822-1897 Always In luck, By Oliver Optic. In the Argosy. Vol. XV, 1892-1893, pp. 155-356. Blue illus. Cloth. XV Alger, Horatio, 1832-1899. Chester Rand. May be interpreted thus: William Taylor Adam’s Always in Luck , written under the pseudonym Oliver Optic, appears in The Argosy , Volume XV, which is bound in the blue illustrated, cloth-covered boards. This volume also contains Horatio Alger’s Chester Rand , and an entry for Chester Rand is also to be found in this checklist in its proper alphabetical place within the listing of Alger’s novels and stories. The number 115 is the shelf or call number for the volume described, and should be cited as (Lieberman 115) in placing a request to have the book retrieved from the stacks. Since this checklist is only a guide to the Lieberman Collection and not a detailed bibliographical accounting, entries are brief, and no attempt has been made to conform to principles of formal bibliographic description. Generally, however, standard terms have been used in describing bindings, with the exception of the use of "paperback" and "illus. Paperback" which have been employed consistently in preference to the terms "wrapper" and "illus. wrapper."

57. Davy Crockett
David Crockett US Representative from Tennesee. Originally published in TheLife of Colonel David Crockett, by Edward Sylvester Ellis (1840 1916).

Not Yours To Give
The following was received as an e-mail from a bud who is apparently a member of, or has access to, The Conservative Caucus Documents of Freedom Collection. Regardless of political stripe, you may catch yourself wondering, as your read the story by the politician Davy Crockett, if such clarity of thought and unabashed statement of principle is even possible in our modern times. This story uses terms seldom heard or taken seriously on today's political stage. Words like "honesty, honor, integrity" and "justice." Moreover, in this story they seem to be applied in earnest and with full importance. With some real reflection, we might also wonder is the hope for honorable public servants like Col. David Crockett lost, or are there just scarce few citizens like Horatio Bunce, who take seriously their civic responsibilities and will hold their elected representatives' feet to the fire to do what is right? Perhaps the old saw is true; we get the government we deserve. Steve Harrison
