Women's Civil War Diaries and Papers - Locations I found a most interesting book called Mothers of Invention; Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War One of the most difficult things to find in researching family history is information on our women ancestors. I thought that Ms. Faust's list was a gold mine of information for family researchers, and with the permission of The University of North Carolina Press, I abstracted the names of the women mentioned and the location of their documents. In the list below the name of the woman is listed first, then the type of document, the name of the collection, writing, book, article, etc. and where the item can be located. If the woman's maiden and married name was listed, she will be found alphabetically under the first letter of her married name. Search first using "find" and then scroll through the names. GOOD LUCK !!! I do not have any additional information on any of these women, books, articles, etc. Maggie Allen , Letter to Mrs. John Palmer, Palmer Family Papers, South Caroliniana Library, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC Alice Niles Andrews , Papers, Manuscript Department, William R. Louise Lyons Heustis: Southern Artist By Catherine L. Druhan The Vulcan Historical Review 4 (Spring 2000) Catherine L. Druhan, 2000. Louise Lyons Heustis Painting a Portrait of Mrs. Ralph Birdsall Little Girl and Her Doll “You can fill in the rest with a very happy life, take it all in all, and faithful work still continuing.” In 1936 Louise Lyons Heustis wrote those words to an admirer of her paintings. At the time she was residing in New York City establishing herself as a prominent professional portrait artist. She had achieved her goal through ambition and hard work. Heustis, a rare example of a successful woman artist, was a contemporary of Celia Beaux, Kate F. Clark, and Mary Cassatt. During the beginning of the twentieth century these women were among the first female artists to gain professional status. Heustis was a native southerner who left her home to achieve her educational and professional goals. Prior to 1900, southern women who wanted to gain independence from their families commonly aspired to careers as schoolteachers. During Reconstruction as southern public schools opened their doors, the school systems needed teachers, but the pay remained too low to attract men to the field. Outside of the teaching profession women most commonly occupied themselves within their home and community.
