[ Author Information Bibliographic Details Kathleen Boone Samuels (1842-1925) of Front Royal, Virginia, penned twenty-five letters to her mother when she was a student at the Woodstock (Virginia) Female Academy in 1860. Clothes formed the major preoccupation of this exuberant teenage girl, who, despite repeated protests to her parents that she was concentrating on her lessons, filled her letters with discussions of the latest fashions and requests for various items of apparel. Her correspondence also sheds light on the curriculum of an antebellum female academy. In 1862, Kathleen became the bride of Green Berry Samuels, a young Confederate officer. This volume includes one letter from Kathleen to her husband, written after the end of the Civil War in 1865, urging him to obtain his release from prison and return home to his wife and baby daughter.

F eb. 11, 1993 The school district will have three assistant superintendents next year instead of two. After a debate about the need, the burden placed on taxpayers and the wording of the resolution, the Board of Education voted 5-2 to create the third $67,000 a-year-job. "It was a war," Rome Catholic High School girls' basketball coach Jackie Herber said. It also was a war that the Lady Redwings won, 48-47, to capture the Inter-valley League title from the Lady Indians at RCH. Feb. 11, 1983 The city wants to spend $280,000 to fix 56 drips in Rome's water and sewer systems. The drips result in the loss of 2 million to 2.5 million gallons of water per day, according to City Engineer Frank Clark. Employees at Marcy Psychiatric Center, already fearful of job losses if the hospital is converted to a prison, are facing more immediate job cuts that could slash 170 people from the work roster. Under Gov. Cuomo's $31.5 billion budget, some 14,000 state jobs are to be cut, with 2,445 of those in the Office of Mental Health. Feb. 11, 1973

A blaze ripped through a downtown block and demolished four buildings in Oneida. A smoke detector alerted occupants who escaped a two-story home at 216 N. George St.; damage was caused to the first floor rear apartment of Philip Regan. Heat tape used to keep water pipes warm in the basement had short circuited. Three persons safely fled flames when a kerosene furnace exploded, sending fire shooting through their trailer home on Lee Valley Road. Marc Gleba, one of the occupants, had helped volunteers battle a blaze at the Clemons farm in Holland Patent Monday morning, only to face a fire at his own home today. He helped rescue two others from the burning home. In North Bay, fire destroyed the home of John E. Jackson Jr., East Lake Street, but he and his family escaped unharmed. Firefighters were hampered by the cold and were stalled by a shortage of water. Some firefighters suffered frostbite and smoke inhalation.
