Jean-Henri FABRE An Outline of his Life: 1823-1915.
December 21 : Birth of Jean-Henri Fabre at St Léons, a small commune of the canton of Vezins, not far from Millau in Haut-Rouergue. He is the first child of Antoine Fabre and Victoire Salgues.
Louis Braille, at the age of 15, invents his alphabet of 63 combinations of 6 dots.
Fabre is sent to live with his paternal grandparents at Le Malaval.
Fabre returns to St Léons to enter primary school.
Fabre obtains a bursary to the Royal College of Rodez, where he learns Latin. Death of Baron Georges Cuvier.
Fabre finishes his schooling at the Royal College of Rodez.
Fabre follows his family to Toulouse and enters the seminary of l'Esquile.
Fabre works as a labourer on railroad construction sites.
Fabre passes the examination for trainee teacher and enters the normal school of Avignon for a two-year course. He learns Greek.
October 3 : Fabre marries Marie-Césarine Villard, also a teacher. July 11 : Birth of their first daughter, Elisabeth-Marie-Virginie. She will die on 30 April, 1846. He obtains his baccalauréat at the age of 23 Letters and Sciences.

Jean-Henri Fabre is well known for his popularization of insect natural history, especially in the ten volumes of Souvenirs Entomoligiques . Although a reclusive amateur, with no scientific training, he was an acute observer of insect behavior. He combined his observations (most made in his own backyard) with a humanistic writing style that made his books popular, at least later in his life; during most of his life, the successive volumes of Souvenirs Entomologiques attracted only mild attention. Fabre was 84 when the last volume appeared, and soon afterward he was "discovered." He was elected to numerous scientific societies, provided a government pension, and even the President of France came to visit him.
In volumes 5 and 6 of the Souvenirs , Fabre detailed the behavior and life history of of local species of Copris, Scarabaeus (Scarabaeinae), and

Bien sûr, n'importe quel profane sait que la cigale enchante les étés provençaux! FABRE , lui, a su pénétrer le monde extraordinaire des scarabées ou encore des fourmis: il a su parler avec une précision et une poésie étonnante dans son oeuvre majeure, " Les Souvenirs Entomologiques ". Aujourd'hui encore, les universitaires du monde entier s'y réfèrent! Sa vie ( Son cabinet de travail se trouve tel qu'au début du siècle, à l' Harmas de Sérignan , avec son herbier, sa table de travail, ses instruments originaux d'observation, ses extraordinaires collections de fossiles, minéraux, coquillages et insectes bien sûr. Son herbier contient de 15 à 17000 variétés végétales, dont la plupart des plantesà fleurs de France et de Corse, mais aussi des cryptogrammes et des champignons. Parmi ses outils d'observation vous remarquerez sa boîte à herboriser, la ruche à osmies (abeilles solitaires), la sacoche qu'il portait lors de ses excursions dans les forêts de Sérignan ou sur le Ventoux, sa "mare vitrée" (aquarium) ou encore d'autres appareillages en bois qui lui servaient à observer le comportements de ponte de la femelle du Minotaure typhée, un insecte coléoptère coprophage. Un harmas désigne en vieux provençal, un terrain en friche. Aujourd'hui encore le jardin botanique conserve l'aspect un peu "sauvage" que le génial naturaliste aimait tout particulièrement.
