    Sukkot Maftir Translation
    Haftarah Translation (Day 1)
Haftarah Translation (Day 2) Those who observe the High Holy Days have very little to see. True, the shofar on Rosh Hashanah presents a distinctive image, but its essence is sound, not sight. On Yom Kippur, the senses are further restricted. There are no concrete symbols. Unlike other holidays, there is not even anything to taste. (Although in some congregations the sense of smell, at least, is acknowledged by fragrant herbs or even snuff being passed around.) Yom Kippur is entirely devoted to speaking and listening. The long confession Al Het lists many sins related to speaking. Yom Kippur, by suppressing the senses, becomes a near-death experience. Sukkot, five days later, is an awakening to life. It is the only holiday described as purely joyful without, for instance, the residue of sadness on Passover that remains because of the plagues of Egypt. Sukkot emphasizes the reawakening to life by charging up the senses. If on Yom Kippur there is nothing to see, on Sukkot there is a kaleidescope of views. The lulav and etrog are lines and curves, straight and round, oasis and riverbank greens and sunshine yellow. The sukkah is a leafy glade grounded in the red earth and pointing the way to the azure sky.
