Edna Ferber
The short stories in this collection take the reader from small-town Wisconsin to the bustling streets of New York and Chicago and back again. While they range greatly in length and tone, they all share the trademark wit and affectionate insight of Edna Ferber. Showcasing the facility with words that made her a mainstay at the Algonquin round table, Ferber explores some of her favorite themes: the role of women (especially strong or unconventional women) in modern society, the mores of the midwestern small town, and the changes over time in relationships between parents and children. In "The Maternal Feminine," a plain, overlooked child grows into a strong, resourceful businesswoman and forms a strong motherly bond with the children of her more attractive sister. In "April 25th, As Usual," an aging Wisconsin couple reluctantly join their successful daughter in New York, where they try to adjust to a very different lifestyle. "Old Lady Mandle"is a bittersweet tale about an elderly Chicago mother coming to terms with the fact that she is no longer the most important woman in the life of her grown son. "One Hundred Per Cent" features Ferber's celebrated heroine Emma McChesney, now re-married, seeing her husband off to war. The stories gathered here are beautifully observed chronicles of early twentieth-century life and are filled with characters who, despite their very human foibles, are all bestowed by Ferber with warmth and dignity.

    Ferber, Edna
American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright, whose works serve as a chronicle of American life in the early 20th century. Her 1924 novel, So Big, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1925.
Ferber was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. After graduating from Ryan High School in Appleton, Wisconsin, she became the first female journalist for the Appleton Daily Crescent. She later worked for the Milwaukee Journal and the Chicago Tribune.
Ferber discarded the manuscript for her first novel, Dawn O'Hara, the Girl Who Laughed (1911), but her mother retrieved it and submitted it to a publisher. In Fanny Herself (1917) Ferber directly addresses the issue of anti-Semitism, showing her characters gaining strength through adversity.
The best-selling novel So Big (1924) chronicles the life of a hardworking, principled farm woman and her materialistic son. Many of Ferber's works were adapted as motion pictures, including Show Boat (1926), about a late-19th-century Mississippi river showboat (filmed in 1936, remade 1951); Cimarron (1930), set during the late-19th-century land boom in Oklahoma (filmed in 1931, remade 1960); Giant (1952), about a wealthy Texas rancher (filmed in 1956); and Ice Palace (1958), which is set in Alaska and credited with helping that territory gain statehood in 1959 (filmed in 1960).

    Ferber
    Edna Ferber
Author The term "best-selling novelist" could have been coined to describe Edna Ferber, who never forgot the seven formative years she spent as a child in Iowa. Ferber was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., but as a tot moved to Ottumwa with her parents, Julia and Jacob, a storekeeper. From Iowa, the Ferbers moved to Appleton, Wis., where Edna, realizing she was not "pretty," gave up her dream of becoming a stage actress. Instead, she turned to writing, starting out as a reporter. Her first novel, "Dawn O'Hara," was published in 1911 after her mother fished it out of the furnace, where Ferber had tossed it when she received many rejection letters. Later came her blockbuster successes, with settings spanning the American landscape: "So Big" (1924), which brought Ferber the Pulitzer Prize, "Show Boat" (1926), "Cimarron" (1929), "Come and Get It" (1935), "Saratoga Trunk" (1941) and "Giant" (1952). Many of her works were turned into lavish movies starring Hollywood's elite. "Show Boat" was filmed three times, in 1929, 1936 and 1951.

REH to Charles D. Hornig, 1 November 1933: "Thanks for the copy of The Fantasy Fan. I found it very interesting, and think it has a good future. Anybody ought to be willing to pay a dollar for the privilege of reading, for a whole year, the works of Lovecraft, Smith, and Derleth. I am glad to see that you announce a poem by Smith in the next issue. He is a poet second to none. I also hope you can persuade Lovecraft to let you use some of his superb verse. Weird poetry possesses an appeal peculiar to itself and the careful use of it raises the quality of any magazine. ¶ I liked very much the department of 'True Ghost Stories' and hope you will continue it. The world is full of unexplained incidents and peculiar circumstances, the logical reasons of which are often so obscure and hidden that they are lent the illusion of the supernatural. ¶ Enclosed find my check for a year's subscription.
