    Music by Jerome Kern 1927
    Book by Edna Ferber
    Edna Ferber 1887-1968
n Won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel After so Big in 1924
n Ferber’s characters are often in conflict with their traditions and new, more dynamic trends..
n Her works reflect the turmoil of the 20’s and 30’s
Show Boat is better understood within the context of when it was written..
    …rather than it’s period setting!
Kern 1885-1945: studied music in both the USA and Europe
This may explain Show boat’s suggestion of the operetta..
In 1912 he produced his first musical: The Red Petticoat
Show Boat based on the novel by Edna Ferber
It is considered to be the first ‘Musical’.
A musical play with a serious plot from a literary source.
Kern’s music is noted for its unmistakably American quality
..In Show Boat he draws upon the Negro Spiritual as a source of inspiration..
    Show Boat is purely American..
    Combining American Cultural elements…
    These elements include:
n Racial/political/social themes exclusive to the Southern States of America
    n Black musical forms
    n A multi racial cast.

    http://www.hnet.net/~wbcml/FERBER.HTM
Washington County Libraries' Sesquicentennial Project presents American Beauty by Edna Ferber Edna Ferber (1887-1968) was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan but grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. After graduating from high school there, she got a job as a full-time reporter for the Appleton Daily Crescent at the age of 17. She later wrote for the Milwaukee Journal and was also a correspondent from Europe during World War II. In addition to her career in journalism, Ferber was a prolific writer of best-sellers that were often made into Hollywood films. She won a Pulitzer Prize in 1924 for So Big , a novel about a woman forced through economic hardship to become a successful vegetable farmer. Critics in the twenties and thirties considered her to be one of the great woman novelists of her time. Her work is known for its romantic portrayal of the lower middle and middle classes in America. Her stories often center around the Midwest, and she wrote about lumbering in Wisconsin in Come and Get It . Nearly all of her work is now out of print. American Beauty , first published in 1931, is the story of a Connecticut family.

    Interviews with Angie Debo, 1981-1985
Collection # 85-013 Prepared by Mildred L. Jackson Go to the Debo Interviews Subject Index Between 1981 and 1985, Dr. Gloria Valencia-Weber and Dr. Glenna Matthews, both faculty members at Oklahoma State University at the time, conducted 17 interviews with Dr. Angie Debo. The interviewers developed questions that covered many aspects of Dr. Debo's life and philosophy. Included in the interviews are discussions of her writing and relationship with publishers, her family and hometown, her employment, her work on establishing Indian land and water rights, and on the history of Oklahoma. These interviews are an important source of information for Angie Debo's philosophies on several topics. Gloria Valencia-Weber was a faculty member in the Psychology Department at Oklahoma State University at the time the interviews were conducted. She received a master's degree from Oklahoma State University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. She met Angie Debo while both were working for the Oklahoma American Civil Liberties Union. Dr. Valencia-Weber served as Director of the Indian Law Certificate Program at the University of New Mexico School of Law from 1994 until Fall 2002. She remains at the University of New Mexico teaching as a full tenured professor. Glenna Matthews possesses history degrees from San Jose State (B.A.) and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. Her first academic position was in the History Department at Oklahoma State University. She continued her academic career at the University of California, Berkeley. Matthews is the author of "Just a Housewife" The Rise and Fall of Domesticity in America (Oxford UP, 1987), The Rise of Public Woman: Woman's Power and Woman's Place in the United States, 1630-1970 (Oxford UP, 1992), and co-author of Running as a Woman: Gender and Power in American Politics (The Free Press, 1994).
